Thanks to a decision reached at the Chicago Board of Education meeting Wednesday, students and faculty will now observe the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day rather than as Columbus Day.
Until now, Chicago Public Schools had celebrated both holidays, but Wednesdays decision means that only Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated.
I think its great, changing the name of the holiday. Thats what (the celebration) is really all about, Chicago charter school teacher Erin Walker said.

Nuke it,
God, please give Illinois insolvency, and soon.
So if it’s the land of the indigenous, what are Chicago non-Injuns doing there?
Give ‘em back the land and head home...where ever that is
98% of Chicago students can’t pronounce “Indigenous” much less know what it means.
I am so sick of this! Columbus deserves his own day, regardless of whether he knew where he was going or where he was when he got there. He was a game changer.
I am American Indian. Please don’t call me indigenous.

wonder which holiday is mentioned in teachers contract
The historical account of CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS.
I think it's more accurate. Stone Age cultures constantly at war with each other inevitably get overcome by advanced cultures.
Columbus never set foot ANYWHERE in the 50 states. We should be celebrating Henry Hudson, but FDR wanted the Catholic vote and so we have a day to honor a man designated a criminal by his employer the Spanish crown.
I'm part Native...
Are they going to practice taking scalps or eating dogs?
You will die trying to eat me..or my dogs though...
Got some cattle too....but they are raised to eat. I ain't, nor my dogs......
More properly called “Indignant People’s Day”
So good to hear from you! I’ve been absolutely fascinated with the history, plight, and ongoing saga of the American Indian since I was a tadpole! I have the utmost respect and admiration for you. Columbus is just another American icon who these filthy democrats are desecrating.
No more pizza in Chicagos schools until they bring back Columbus Day.
Will they celebrate the major medical discoveries from the Indigenous Peoples, technological advances, space exploration, disease eradication, defeating evil dictators, etc?
Ignant peoples day? Who you callin ignant you racis jive turkey
Actually, I don’t have a problem with this. Just make it a dual holiday that celebrates Indigenous people and Columbus.
“Columbus deserves his own day, regardless of whether he knew where he was going or where he was when he got there. He was a game changer.”
Ironically, the Americas would have been discovered within 8 years even if Columbus never lived when Cabral got blown by storms into Brazil while on his way to India.
I have to wonder how many “indigenous” kids attend Chicago Public Schools. Do they outnumber the Italian-descended kids?
