Coronavirus: Diet Coke supplies could be affected by outbreaks

We’re OK now, but officials at Coca-Cola said if the coronavirus continues to spread, there could be an impact on how much Diet Coke and other low-cal drinks are available.

The sugar alternatives Coke uses in Diet Coke and its other zero-sugar drinks have been delayed, the company said in its annual report released Monday, CNN reported.

But the good news is, the company has started its contingency supply plans to cover the short-term impact.

“However, we may see tighter supplies of some of these ingredients in the longer term should production or export operations in China deteriorate,” Coke said in the filing, according to CNN.

The ingredient that could be impacted by the virus is sucralose, also known as Splenda, which is used in not only in some Diet Coke variants, but also Powerade Zero. It is sourced from suppliers in both the US and in China, CNN reported. But the company did not specify what exactly could be delayed.

Used everywhere in the world for decades, but banned in the US:

Cyclamate was discovered in 1937 at the University of Illinois by graduate student Michael Sveda. Sveda was working in the lab on the synthesis of anti-fever medication. He put his cigarette down on the lab bench, and, when he put it back in his mouth, he discovered the sweet taste of cyclamate

Should we be suing China for selling us harmful products, hurting American health? Seems fair considering that line worked with regards to tobacco that we used to promote and sell.

I quit drinking nearly all pop around seven years ago, and its the best decision for my health I’ve ever made.

I might have 4 or 5 glasses of ginger ale spread over a calendar year.

For sure.

I’m a lot more worried about parts for our water treatment plants... where one part crashes the system.

To test the persistent rumors, many years ago, a group of scientists conducted tests on the spermicidal efficacy of various soft drinks. Typically not very effective, with the noted exception of diet coke, which utterly sterilized the test samples.

The scientists were unwilling to speculate as to why.

We need to put permanent tariffs on strategic products made in China.

Unfortunately it appears the ‘back up plan’ also involved suppliers from China.
