I love Rush but he has stated several time today that the death rate of Corona virus is LESS than the death rate of influenza. This is just flat out wrong.
From the CDC website
Mortality rate of influenza: Deaths per 100,000 population: 2.
So the CDC says that for every 100,000 people that get the flu, 2 of them will die from it. What is the mortality rate percentage?:
2 (the number of deaths) divided by 100,000 = .00002, or .002%.
The estimated mortality rate of corona (which he is basing on the number out of China = 2-3%.
Death rate of flu= .002%
Death rate of Corona = 2%
The death rate of corona is a THOUSAND times greater than the flu...and that's assuming that we used Chinese numbers. Using IRAN number the death rate is 15%...
Rush MIGHT be referring to the fact that the flu can kill up to 80,000 americans in a year. But that's only because there's a LOT more people infected with various flu viruses. When as many people are infected by the corona virus then there would be an accurate comparison.
According to this, in 2016, 80,000 died from the flu. There were 900,000 hospitalized. That is about a 9% death rate. However, it is reasonable to assume that the vast majority of cases are not reported. But if there were 3,600,000 cases of the flu that year, that would be a 2.25% death rate.

Rush must have read the thread. Mortality rate in USA is .002%. Mortality rate for the world is still less than 1%.
Look at the data for the death rate OUTSIDE of Hubei. The panic mongers want to ignore that fact for some reason:

South Korea, 10 deaths out of 977.
Cruise ship 3 out of 691.
Japan 1 out 170.

We really don’t have all the facts, and the data doesn’t support the “OH NOES WE ARE ALL DOOMEZ” mantra from a certain segment of the population who really, really hate President Trump and want to see him defeated because they would rather have a magic underpants in charge.
and those stats do not count the death from re-infection - of which the Chinese do not count but is usually fatal.
I think Rush has better access to “real” numbers than all of us. I don’t trust anything our media puts out there nor anything China is releasing either. I’m gonna go with Rush on this.

They can test and manipulate the numbers to say anything they want.

The death rate is already 100%. Every individual that is born will die. Ditto with hatched. Along with test tube and turkey basters. It is the one fact of life: You ain’t getting out of it alive.
That's not what the CDC says about the mortality rate in the US.
Even if it's true Rush keeps saying that the mortality rate of the flu is FAR higher than the mortality rate of corona. That's flatout wrong.

While it is certain that more Chinese have died from this than any other ethnicity, that might just be because this thing is going on in a place mostly populated by Chinese...

There is actually no way to tell how many flu cases there are each year. I have never gone to the doctor for the flu and have never reported it to the CDC. So the only figures that are realistic are deaths (as determined by a coroner) and hospitalizations (if reported).
You are wrong too. The 2/100000 is total population. The final figure for the new virus is hard to estimate, since it is so early in the infection curve. Many may be being exposed and not diagnosed because they have mild cases. Bottom line it is way to soon to be speculating about the death rate/case, but it is not 1000x worse than flu, nor is it likely to be less than the flu. In fact since it is a new virus it most likely will be higher since there is no immunity in the population.
