For many years Ive avoided writing about West Side Story. As a Puerto Rican critic, I resent the expectation that I have something to say about a musty old musical from 1957.
Just as the U.S. government bestowed second-class American citizenship upon islanders in 1917 without popular consent, West Side Story continues to recruit us as extras even when we never intended to audition for the show. The Puerto Rican writer Nelson Rivera once recalled studying abroad in Paris, where he was greeted by Oui, West Side Story! at every turn, as if collecting stamps in the passport of an imaginary nation everyone else thought was real.

The irony is that, at the time, it was viewed as a liberal musical that fought stereotypes. Liberalism is fleeting and unmoored because its always destroying everything that came before it, including its own foundations.
P.R.’s are the biggest bunch of entitled pricks in America.
The Jets are in gear,
Our cylinders are clickin’!
The Sharks’ll steer clear,
‘Cause ev’ry Puerto Rican
‘S a lousy chicken!
I'd say that's the only stereotype that needs to die.
One night their equipment truck broke down, so we (Spirit of Atlanta) loaned them our horns and drums. They beat us with our own equipment!

What’s the writer’s complaint?
What? Is it a story about hiding hurricane and earthquake relief supplies from victims for the singular purpose of making the orange man look bad?
(Worked with an Italian dude that grew up in the projects - said all the other kids kept speaking Spanish to him, couldn't understand a word they said.)
You can just feel the hate when you read this nonsense. West Side Story is an amazing musical with a brilliant score by Bernstein. And this witch wants it gone.
Face it, folks. Leftists hate you and anything to do with traditional Western culture. If given the chance, they will kill you and erase all trace of anything that came before their revolution. They are already working on that second part now.
“Harlem was a paradise until the Puerto Ricans came in!” Fred Sanford, circa 1975.
Agreed, I'm in the North, a Yankee, and I'm upset they are taking all the Confederate historical symbols down, why are we erasing history as painful as it might be? It's wrong.
“As a Puerto Rican critic...”
You’re a critic alright, and an idiot as well. Always complaining about something in the world. Never happy about anything.
I have this fantasy that one day all the minorities that hate us and our culture come to the conclusion we can't be 'fixed' and they decide to leave and return to their own people free of hate, stereotypes, sexism, homophobia, bias, prejudice, and racism.
Why people stay among people they believe hate them has always been a mystery to me.
Nothing does a better job of reinforcing stereotypes about Puerto Rican people than a trip to Puerto Rico.
...why are we erasing history as painful as it might be? It’s wrong.
I agree with you. They want to take down all the symbols, change all the names, and erase all the history because it reminds them of slavery. But try for one minute to STOP acknowledging slavery and their entitlement to reparations and affirmative action and see what you get. They are Ass clowns.
Cool story! This the one? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X7XKvtvruv8
My flag coach was with the Madison Scouts. Also had a couple of friends in Southwind before they folded.
Everything free in America.
Puerto Rico
My heart’s devotion
Let it sink back in the ocean
Always the hurricanes blowing
Always the population growing
And the money owing
And the sunlight streaming
And the natives steaming
I like the island Manhattan
Smoke on your pipe
And put that in!
