Weekly Garden Thread - February 22-29, 2020
February 22, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 02/22/2020 8:47:50 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I am in Georgia and going to plant some Buckwheat for my bees. I know that it is too early to plant outside so I will plant some of them indoors.

I am also going to burn about a quarter of an acre to clear the land for the future growth of buckwheat in the spring.

After I burn the ground cover, can I put my chicken compost on the ground to its way in and then wait until late next month to till it in and then plant the Buckwheat?

Gardening is on hold & pretty much everything else .... totally engrossed in Iron Dog Snow Machine race ... been going on all week & everyone is exhausted from following the race (lots of index fingers worn out hitting the ‘refresh’ button on GPS tracking. Today is the last day - big finish at Big Lake. Race started with 29 sleds, down to 13 at the start this morning ... one breakdown, one crash ... now 11. Another sled is pinging ‘zero’ (the Canadians, doggone it - they’ve become fan faves & family members flew in to be at the finish waiting for them).

Icy creeks, two sleds caught on fire, illness, crashes, mechanicals, ‘moose menace’ .... if they lose any more sleds today, the entire remaining field will end up in the top ten!

Hi, lovely lady.

I see there are just a few replies so far on the thread, so I'll say "hi" to one of my favorite people.

This big cat loves fresh air, gardens, and DJT.

All: Help needed. Got a Totally Tomatoes catalog. Never started tomatoes from seed, understand the gist. Have inside sunroom - can start tomatoes from seed. Overwhelmed by choices... Any hints/suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks...

“...can I put my chicken compost on the ground to work its way in and then wait until late next month to till it in and then plant the Buckwheat?”

Depends upon how ‘fresh’ that chicken compost is. I never used any unless it had aged for at least a year. It’s SO acidic, and will burn anything it touches if it’s too fresh.

If it’s been aged for a year, then I see no problem with your plan. :)

‘Totally Tomatoes’ belongs to Jung Seed, the company I worked for for 10 years.

Your FIRST decision should be to decide how many plants you want, which types of plants and how much room you have.

Give me some more details and I’ll recommend some varieties for you to try that I’ve grown myself through the years. :)

LOL! Thanks!

I’m moving slowly, today. Beau was sick with a cold earlier in the week and has been kind enough to give it to me! I’m working on breaking my last sleep-record of 72 hours in a three day period from the last time I was sick.

Nothing major. I don’t get sick often, but when I do, I’m down for the count for a number of days. :(

I like Roma for a meaty tomato for cooking (sauces ). Big Boy or Better Boy for large tomato slices.

If I had to choose one, it would be Roma.

cheers

These will make you feel better than new. Big butterscotch flavor stands out from the milk chocolate toffee---delicious and fast.
Enjoy w/ glass of cold milk or hot coffee. DO NOT overcook, 11 min tops, great results everytime---rated 5 stars. Yields 5 dozen.

Butterscotch Toffee Cookies

BATTER Blend/beat 2 eggs, 1/2 c canola oil; gradually add pkg butter pecan cake mix; mix well.
Fold in 10 oz butterscotch chips, 8 oz milk chocolate English toffee bits. Drop tbl batter 2" apart
on greased sheetpan. Bake golden 350 deg 10-12 min. Cool a min; liftoff to wire racks.

VARY Use chopped pecans, toffee bits, pkg butterscotch pudding.

Aw, sorry you got a cold!

Hey, at least it will be warm this weekend.

Picked up a pretty pink orchid at Home Depot this week. I have 3 now. One of them (deep pink) I’ve had a few years and it is re-blooming again. They sure are easy to keep. The yellow one is really neat. HD had the same yellow variety this week.

cheers

It’s been a blast!! Last night up late .... waiting for the last 4 teams to come in. The ‘fan fair’ is long over so the locals have turned out (30 + vehicles at last count, mostly trucks, half an hour ago) & lined the ‘chute’ with their vehicles, lights on. Homemade signs, cow bells, people whooping it up ... I think these last 4 teams are going to get a louder, more excited ‘welcome home’ than the first 7!!
