This will be the forever thread.
I’m thinking of doing a big batch of sweet potato puree and carrot puree today, I use that for making really tasty sweet bread that packs a good nutritional punch.
I can throw those loaves in the freezer to add to my prepping stores!
We haven’t stopped with fresh produce but if we really do the “shelter in place” thing we’ll pretty much have to live off of our Costco stuff... My brain still can’t quite get around really needing to do that - despite the fact that the evidence from Iran, S. Korea, and Italy suggests that we all need to act sooner rather than later.
My husband wants to wait for “community spread” - and I’m like “What community? LA? San Francisco? By the time we have cases here it’ll be all over Anchorage...”
Our weak point is the amount of Alaskans that go to warm places in Jan/Feb, plus the Int’l pilots. We are the largest hub for Asia in terms of packages and air freight - and while traffic is way down, it is by no means stopped. Our pilots could bring that stuff back & spread it around.
At this point people who are sick should not be allowed in stores. Curbside pickup only. You cannot rely on other people caring about your health anymore in America unfortunately.
The current test kits being distributed by CDC uses a technology (Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase (RT)-PCR) that exists in very few laboratories and almost no hospitals. It is designed for a specific piece of equipment, and the CDC won't even send out kits to hospitals or labs that are not properly equipped.
From the (CDC) horses mouth:
CDCs test kit is intended for use by laboratories designated by CDC as qualified, and in the United States, certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to perform high complexity tests. The test kits also will be shipped to qualified international laboratories, such as World Health Organization (WHO) Global Influenza Surveillance Response System (GISRS) laboratories. The test will not be available in U.S. hospitals or other primary care settings. The kits will be distributed through the International Reagent Resourceexternal icon (IRR)I suspect this equipment (Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast DX Real-Time PCR Instrument) is, like most medical lab equipment, either made in China, or dependent on Chinese parts, so labs that don't have one now, will probably not be getting one.
re: yeast in lungs
inhaled corticosteroids increase risk of thrush - weren’t some of the initial patients treated with steroids?
Could be. Or door handles, water spigots, walking though buildings etc. I think this is the start of bad news here on our soil.
(Filing away info.)
I want the T Shirt.
I thought I read somebody was working on a 30 minute blood test through a quick finger prick. Wishful thinking?
I’ve not heard that, but hopefully someone comes up with a quick test that works and can be made widely available. I don’t expect that to happen soon.

Not ready “yet” so who knows if/when.
Agree with all that, but we are dealing with a cult. A few of them will gladly infect themselves with the disease just to dramatize the lack of compassion....yada yada yada.
