Drafting, blocking and bumping are essential elements of racing on NASCARs fastest tracks. When Ryan Blaney pushed fellow Ford driver Ryan Newman in the final lap of the Daytona 500, it was something both men have done hundreds of times on superspeedways.

A car running alone in the pack without a drafting partner is often shuffled back in the field. Drivers who can lock bumpers and stay connected surge toward the front. The downside to this racing is that one wiggle can create a harrowing accident, and pack racing usually leads to massive wrecks that collect multiple competitors who have no way of avoiding melees.

It will be a miracle if he can walk after that crash...and he already had one miracle just being alive.
DAYTONA 500 IS OVER....
I watched the Daytona 500 on Monday. It was the worst Race I have ever seen. I have seen many since the late 1960’s or so.
The pushing by direct contact caused most major wrecks - of which there were many. Somehow the Front and Rear Bumpers were latching together and caused spinouts. In the 1950 -60’s it was common for the 2nd place car on the last lap to touch the rear quarter of the lead car - spin-out and go on to Win. Think Richard Petty.
The multiple attempts for an non- Caution finish also made things worse. As they took out many of the faster lead cars the slower inexperienced Drivers got into the mix.
Without change I would not watch or attend again.
and for those that haven’t seen it..here is how the wreck looked as seen by the Winner’s Crew...
ahem...

This will be an interesting thread I’m bettin’
Another Ford driver (Dave Blaney) was trying to help push Newman to the lead, but he got pushed out of shape by another car and came across Newman’s rear bumper instead of straight on. At those speeds and banking a push has to be lined up perfectly or a wreck will ensue.
here is the audio of the spotter helping Hamlin win as the wreck happens

“Climate Change”, no doubt...
That was Denny Hamlin. The guy who won the race.
Yep, I guess that's a downside.
Sorry Link doesn’t work.
Kinda hard to listen too. And not from an audio quality perspective.
This Link as typed works but not from FR.
That was Denny Hamlin. The guy who won the race.
Did he do it deliberately? Only one person will ever know.
And it also provides information you dont see anywhere else.
How many articles have posted those two videos that I posted.
I don't know anything about auto racing, but this sounds dangerously illegal. If this is permitted during races - I don't get it... seems anyone doing that would be disqualified - just like rules that exist for fair play in other pro sports......
Yep it’s allowed. And IIRC, one of the drivers had caused a massive wreck doing it earlier in the race. I think it was the one that took out my Jimmy Johnson.
