NASCAR driver Corey LaJoie, who hit Ryan Newman's car during the final lap of the Daytona 500 on Monday and sent him spinning into a fiery wreck, has recalled the horrifying impact and said he did not know who he'd hit because he was going so fast.

Newman remains in the hospital in a serious condition. According to a NASCAR statement released on Monday night, he is expected to make a full recovery.

He was leading the famous race in his No. 6 Ford Mustang when he first hit the wall at 195 miles per hour.

It sent his car spinning backwards and LaJoie, who was driving behind him, then crashed into the driver's side of Newman's vehicle.

Newman's Mustang flipped multiple times and began spitting out flames. He was pulled from the wreckage in front of nervous crowds afterwards and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

President Trump tweeted on Monday night that he was 'praying' for the 42-year-old driver.

On Tuesday morning during an interview with Good Morning America, LaJoie said he it was 'very scary' what had happened.

to me, Ryan’s teammate looked loose but other people are more expert in the whole aerodynamic issue

Ditto that

As someone who did race at Stafford, Plainville, Thompson and Waterford, when I was much younger, it is amazing that he is alive. Today’s race cars are engineered to be as safe as possible.

I wasn’t too worried about him being upside down until the car spun so that the driver’s side of the car was turned to oncoming race traffic... and then immediately t-boned.

A horrible wreck to be sure, but Newman had one thing on his side when t-boned.

His car was still moving at considerable speed in the same direction as the one that whacked him, which increased his chance to survive.

Being t-boned by a car going 190mph with your vehicle motionless is instant death.

I watched a little and it reminded me why I stopped watching a decade ago. The dick moves of bumping the car in front of you and either spinning it into a wreck or pushing it into the car in front of it and causing the same was seen again and again. The guys “ooh, don’t you know how fast 200 mph is? we can’t control everything” should be DQ’d for it. That would greatly reduce it and stop 1: putting people in hospital and 2: make the douchebags known for it stop doing it.

The driver was not weaving...going 200 mph inches apart is not for the faint of heart. It takes a special person to drive anything over 200+ mph..

The driver was not weaving

I'll take your word for it. It appeared from the video I saw the guy behind him was going back and forth and then hit as he was still sliding the front bumper against his rear bumper and the sliding impact seemed to cause his spin.

Again, I say bad move by the Gibbs team. Shiite, that angle with the pit crew celebrating, as the car is sliding on its roof and in flames just outside the pit, is unnerving. What a piss poor move.

to all gloomers out there;... it is racing, all drivers know and understand the risk they are taking when strapping into the driver’s seat... what happened is unfortunate but it is a part of racing... daytona is a 2.5 mile track... when the wreck happened it was caused by “drafting” which is one or more race cars pushing each other to gain speed due to tapered spacers placed between the fuel injection throttle body and intake manifold to intentionally slow the throttle response down and maintain top speeds around 200 miles per hour... with the large track combined with traveling at almost 200 mph denny hamlin couldn’t see the severity of the crash that injured ryan newman... i suggest everyone goes to joe gibbs racing and denny hamlins twitter pages to see first hand the condolences and prayers offered before continuing to discuss something you people obviously know nothing about...

That first picture at the link of the car in mid air after being struck on Newmans side looks doctored. That same pic on last nights thread sure looks like you can see his head / Face “something” where is just a blacked out area in the cockpit of this pic.

Do you believe, after watching the crash footage, that this was an intentional “pit maneuver?”

I saw video. It showed Blaney following Newman to the left side of the track. Blaney moved up very close to Newman’s rear bumper. Suddenly Blaney’s car plows into the right rear bumper of Newman’s car and pushes it out of his way. This was exactly like the cops do when they use a “pit maneauver.” It caused a clockwise spin of Newman’s car that barely missed Hamlin’s car as it swerved into the right barrier wall. From there it was Blaney and Hamlin speeding to the finish line where Hamlin wins it in a photo finish. If Newman’s car had hit Hamlin, Blaney would have won it.

As I see it, Blaney’s “pit maneuver” was worth a try. /sarc

Newman’s car was not T-boned. It was bumped at it’s right rear bumper, sending it into a clockwise spin with no further contact. This was what is called a “pit maneuver” used to push a car out of your way with little danger to your car. For that reason, cops are trained to use it.

You're talking about the initiation of the crash.

I'm talking about the t-bone by LaJoie's vehicle which is the most cringe worthy and life threatening part of the crash.
