NASCAR driver Corey LaJoie, who hit Ryan Newman's car during the final lap of the Daytona 500 on Monday and sent him spinning into a fiery wreck, has recalled the horrifying impact and said he did not know who he'd hit because he was going so fast.
Newman remains in the hospital in a serious condition. According to a NASCAR statement released on Monday night, he is expected to make a full recovery.
He was leading the famous race in his No. 6 Ford Mustang when he first hit the wall at 195 miles per hour.
It sent his car spinning backwards and LaJoie, who was driving behind him, then crashed into the driver's side of Newman's vehicle.
Newman's Mustang flipped multiple times and began spitting out flames. He was pulled from the wreckage in front of nervous crowds afterwards and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
President Trump tweeted on Monday night that he was 'praying' for the 42-year-old driver.
On Tuesday morning during an interview with Good Morning America, LaJoie said he it was 'very scary' what had happened.

Tragic. And I see from the article that he is going through a recent divorce, too, with two beautiful little daughters in the mix. Uffda.
Technology, safety measures have come a long way
I remember watching the fatal Daytona/Earnhardt race almost 20 years ago..
Imagine this crash back then
Newman is an engineer. Thus he had a better understanding than some drivers. He was fined for speaking out against Nascar as it pertains to safety.
But it is certainly better than the days of Earnhardt.
I’m sure this is crass, but I hope he has paperwork, etc in order. I don’t think I’d like having a soon-to-be ex in charge of my healthcare, etc.
Too be fair... The guy who crashed was weaving and attempting to block the guy that bumped him into a spin. The end of race did look more like a game of high speed bumper cars though.
Did not see the rearward tap from the guy behind him, but if there was one and it caused the flip, perhaps the move should be outlawed
He was right behind him... how could he not know who he hit?
He was right behind the leader, in the last lap, and bumped him out of the way, almost killing him.
I am not buying it- he should shut up.
JoLei was not the one who bumped him. He was just driving along at 200 MPH, and suddenly a car dropped sideways in front of him. He’d not really have a chance to do anything about it, or know who it was he hit.
“Uffda”
Lol! I don’t see that exclamation often. Are you from NW Minnesota or NE North Dakota by any chance?
Yee haw, we got it....
Man, anything for a win.
OK thank you for the correction. I only saw the accident once really quick on the news.
guy who hit him is a teammate. Listen to the audio from the spotter. You can hear him say shove shove sidedraft...etc
Btw, you can side draft air into the leads wheel well.
sidedrafting can speed you up and slow the other guy down
to me, Ryan’s teammate looked loose but other people are more expert in the whole aerodynamic issue
bump
The taller spoiler is acting more like a parachute and the car is much more sensitive to side-drafting.
They essentially had just won their Super Bowl, and the crash happened literally less than 2 seconds before the spotter said that. Maybe let them enjoy the moment for, say, 10 seconds, before making him worry about something that might have zero consequences? There have been plenty of upside down wrecks before with no significant injuries.
Man, anything to complain and accuse.
That side-draft thing is one driver to the next. It doesnt work for everybody. Every driver doesnt know how to do it and every driver doesnt know how to bump-draft somebody.
Looks like Blaney was the driver right behind Newman as they headed toward the finish. Newman dropped down to the lower part of the track, and it looked to me that he started spinning right when his back tire touched the yellow stripe. It almost seemed as though the different texture of the paint, along with the angle of the turn, and having a driver directly behind him might have contributed to the crash. I don’t know if Blaney actually touched him, though.
Folks...lots of Democrat Party low life, scum & vermin are howling that POTUS, Trump coming to be the Grand Marshall of the 2020 Daytona 500 Race, jinxed Ryan Newman, who is a big Trump supporter.
I think differently. I know a little bit about airplanes and when the flight crew on Air Force One buzzed the race track at 800 feet altitude, I knew that was quite a feat that crew commanded.
Trump loves NASCAR...always has!!! IMHO.....God was traveling with the Trumps to protect them and God blessed the track, the drivers, their families, their loved ones. And with our Lord, was the one and only Dale Earnhardt, Sr whose death insured the life of Ryan Newman with the installation of the Earnhardt/Newman Safety Bar. NASCAR lives, Newman lives, Glory unto God and Dale Earnhardt, Sr!!! May God bless NASCAR its drivers, its teams and its fans...forever Amen!!!
Go...Trumpie!!! NASCAR luvs ya!!!
I want you to look at this angle of the crash..which also shows the Fed Ex team of Hamlin celebrating in the moment as he wins(that’s okay) but also look at their view of the wreck.
There is NO WAY they did not understand that was a serious wreck. Poor Management of NASCAR and Joe Gibbs team for how the whole thing was handled. CLEARLY, that driver could be dead or seriously injured

“The guy who crashed was weaving and attempting to block the guy that bumped him into a spin”
This is what NASCAR wants, massive wrecks that thrill people. Going back in history when the smart guys at NASCAR put the restrictor plate requirement on all cars to prevent the fastest car from running ahead and winning. Then they allow bumping and spinning cars off their front bumper which BTW I believe the cops call a “pit maneuver” to stop a bad guy. Almost every wreck was caused by this bumping.
