Colorado skier dies from asphyxiation by his coat on a chair lift

The 46-year-old man from New Jersey died in a "serious incident" on February 13, Vail Mountain said in the statement.

It began when the man boarded the Skyline Express lift on chair 37 in the Blue Sky Basin, the statement said. He then fell through an opening in the seat and was caught with his coat wrapped around his head and neck, according to CNN affiliate KMGH.

Reports indicate his chair was left in the upright position, which caused him to fall through when he sat, the station said.

His death was caused by positional asphyxia and has been ruled an accident, Coroner Kara Bettis told The Vail Daily.

I saw a picture of the seat up & down. I can’t believe this hasn’t happened before. Why don’t they paint a big DANGER sign on the underside of the seat or something so people will notice that it isn’t down?

You’re right, I did not consider that he might have been in the middle. And of course an older lift comes fast. And it’s easy to be critical when you aren’t the one making unexpected split second decisions. Definitely something to think about. All in all, I think it does come down to an inattentive lift operator at the bottom.

We once had a family member who could not open the safety bar to unload at the top (it was an ancient lift in Europe where the bar swung in like a door). She went around the wheel at the top and started heading down the mountain. It took one of us banging on the glass of the operator’s shack for him to wake up and stop the lift.

It was a joke, FRiend. I know they usually only eat you after you are dead. :)
When I was in Florida the biggest threat was all those old people that couldn’t see over the steering wheel.

Two things:

1) What did this guy know about the Clintons?

2) People in Alabama haven't had a reason to fear the Gators in over a decade.

I speak from experience! Two weeks ago we were skiing locally and on an older lift. I was on the left side waiting to board the chairlift and my 2 other seatmates crowded me over too far. The chair—and older lift— came up quickly behind me and since I was crowded over too far left, I did not get a good seat whereby the chair catapulted me forward to the ground. I hit the ground HARD! As the chair went over my head, by husband jumped off and they stopped the chair. I can say this; if I had not had a helmet on, I would have been seriously hurt as I hit my head so hard that the helmet cracked. My neck still hurts.

Why do the seats go up?
So snow doesn’t accumulate?

They normally put the seats up at the end of the day to keep the snow from accumulating. My experience has been (because my husband insists on being one of the first in line in the morning) is that they run the lifts through a cycle before people board in order to put the seats down and brush off any snow. Sounds like operator error.

“his chair was left in the upright position”

I’ve never seen a ski lift where the chair folded up, that seems supremely stupid and dangerous.

Yes, the seats are flipped up (vertical, against the chair back) to prevent snow accumulation when the lift isn’t in operation. When lifts are running, and it is snowing, the lift attendants use brooms to brush each chair as it swings through the lift house at the bottom.

I have, many times. I have skied Blue Sky Basin at Vail, but it has been awhile. That might have been an older lift. But yes, they put the seats up in order to not have a foot of snow accumulate on them overnight.

Depending on how much powder there is, you might actually survive the fall at a ski resort, so there’s that.

Well, as for the several ski lift attendants I knew in the 70’s and 80’s...
