I was a bad influence on the Beatles: James Taylor
The Guardian ^ | Feb 17, 2020 | Jenny Stevens

..Born in Boston in 1948, Taylor was, according to his memoir, “brought up devoted to progressive politics, self-improvement and the arts”. His father, a doctor, moved the family to the south when he became the dean of the medical school of the University of North Carolina; his mother didn’t want to go, and fought against the politics she found there. She saw the north-eastern state of Massachusetts as a “lost Eden” and would spend her days doing sit-ins at segregated lunch counters, on protests, and hauling her five kids to Martha’s Vineyard every summer to “restore our Yankee credentials”. Not long after moving the family to North Carolina, Taylor’s father was assigned to the navy. He spent two years on an expedition to the south pole, where he held the keys to the liquor cabinet of 100 men. He went to the bottom of the world and returned with a serious drinking problem...

....He hopes this year to perform to help get out the vote ahead of the US presidential election. He met Donald Trump once, “in an airport. I just thought of him as a frivolous, minor player. It drives me crazy how unworthy he is of our attention and how much of it he has.” He is rooting for the Democratic candidates Deval Patrick and Elizabeth Warren – both from Massachusetts, where he now lives. “But at this point, I’d be happy to see pretty much anyone in – the bar is so low. Because the very worst person possible that you could think to be heading the thing is there. It’s like the Confederacy has won the civil war.”

ROFL to both posts!

His songs are depressing and yes, ex heroin addicts aren’t usually the folks I base my political views on :)

I still like him. His music was a big part of my life.

My wife and I danced at our wedding to one of his songs.

Is he screwed up politically? Sure he is. But if I drew that hard a line with people to hate everyone who is screwed up, I couldn't love many members of my own family either.

I just hope that someday James finds the Jesus he sang about in some of his songs.

I sing fire, and I sing rain. I sing lonely times and never had a friend. Or something like that.

I thought it was Bob Dylan’s fault. Most of Taylor’s influence probably exists in his own mind.

Once, a good artist. Now, an old gasbag.

James, you’re so vain you probably think someone cares what you’re saying.

“Well, I was a bad influence to be around the Beatles at that time, too.” Why? “Because I gave John opiates.” Did you introduce him to them? “I don’t know,” he says. Lennon, by many accounts, picked up a heroin habit in 1968 that contributed to an unhealable rift in the band.

So, he’s the male Yoko...

If anyone is interested besides me .... here is the quote that explains the headline

Taylor has a reputation as a real creep to the women in his life. Cold as ice when he is done with a relationship.

Was a big James Taylor fan for three albums, then his later music had little appeal and later still his leftist leanings became more and more obvious.

"It’s like the Confederacy has won the civil war"

Except that the Confederacy was run by Democrats and the Republicans freed the slaves. But that's neither here nor there...

Another one of the condescending multi-generational new england “elite”. I saw him at the Sean Collier memorial set at MIT and just thought “self involved putz”. Just wasn’t impressed.

I liked the old Chevy he had in the movie Two Lane Blacktop...

Big block, tunnel ram and duel quads.

Was that the one where he and his buddy are going cross-country, and some guy with a fancy stock car bets them he’ll get there first? And they get involved with the guy and his girl passenger, helping him keep his car going. And at the end, Taylor is happily in the zone drag racing the Chevy?

And was it James Taylor or Maxwell Taylor? I could never remember.

I did a business deal with Trump over the phone and then met him at a political function a few years later. He was a pleasure to do business with and a pleasure in person. Heroin addict Taylor can go eff himself!
