Human compost funerals 'better for environment'

A US firm has given scientific details of its "human composting" process for environmentally friendly funerals. A pilot study on deceased volunteers showed that soft tissue broke down safely and completely within 30 days. The firm, Recompose, claims that its process saves more than a tonne of carbon, compared to cremation or traditional burial. It says that it will offer the world's first human composting service in Washington state from next February. Speaking exclusively to BBC News, Recompose's chief executive and founder, Katrina Spade, said that concerns about climate change had been a big factor in so many people expressing interest in the service.

I(f I recall correctly, certain of the Plains Indians did not bury their dead immediately, but put them on elevated platforms and let them decompose in the wind, only taking down the hard remains after several months, and burying them with the symbols of the life honors they had gained in their lifetimes. This was by no means a universal practice, and I am not even sure all these elements were present. But I have seen dozens of Indian burial mounds, and some practices are consistent with a belief in a “spirit world”.

I’m thinking it’s not the first...what about those above ground cemeteries in New Orleans? They usually have quite a few names on the marker.

Does anyone know how much it’s gonna cost me to rot “in a respectful manner”? It’s been my experience every time someone mentions “environment” it’s gonna cost me a ton (solar panels, ‘nuff said).

I thought that by dying I was fulfilling my duties to “the environment”. But now I find that Maoists want to desecrate my remains as well.

It works in New Orleans because of the extreme heat. 30 days in one of those things and nothing is left not even bones.

Sounds something like a Zoroastrians sky burial because they considered both earth and fire sacred, so couldn’t bury or burn bodies.

I find this to be anything but desecration. Desecration is embalming, slapping make-up on the body, stitching eyes and lips closed, A gaudy, finished casket...

Jewish burials are never (supposed to be) embalmed. The coffin (or simple shawl — or cardboard box) is 100% natural.

Yes, it is a much more civilized tradition.

And do they already have to be deceased?

Strikes me that you are talking about 'late abortion'. Very popular in New York State, or at least for its governor. He should try it himself, as soon as possible. Then he can pioneer this composting as well!
