Human compost funerals 'better for environment'

A US firm has given scientific details of its "human composting" process for environmentally friendly funerals. A pilot study on deceased volunteers showed that soft tissue broke down safely and completely within 30 days. The firm, Recompose, claims that its process saves more than a tonne of carbon, compared to cremation or traditional burial. It says that it will offer the world's first human composting service in Washington state from next February. Speaking exclusively to BBC News, Recompose's chief executive and founder, Katrina Spade, said that concerns about climate change had been a big factor in so many people expressing interest in the service.

I actually really like this idea. I know the article clouds the whole thing in climate change which to me is not the issue. This just seems so much more respectful and peaceful than the traditional methods of embalming, a big wooden box with a mattress inside, formal dress of the body etc.... also so much more peaceful and respectful than cremation. I really want to look into this more. I understand that you have to be composted above ground because of Public health issues, but I always thought people should just be buried wrapped in cloth , without any of the disrespect to the body that I consider traditional funeral practices to be.

Depends on what they die from. If a person dies from “Mad Cow Disease”...they have to be buried, AFAIK.

If it is legal to be buried without embalming and without a coffin, I wonder why they just don’t do that. To me that seems ideal. Very old-school and very respectful.

All the carbon in your body and the fuel used to cremate you will eventually return to the environment again regardless of how. The only way to prevent that is to shoot you into space.

Unless you are cremated you are going to rot no matter what. This seems preferable to me. Modern funeral practices are barbaric, IMO.

With you. Helped an aunt build her own casket, even tried to peddle them for a minute. Plane ole yellow pine; what more does one need? (Ironically, she was interred into a vault)..

I have an acquaintance in the funeral industry. Composting and the process for turning your remains into a paving stone are gaining momentum.

I went through a season of hard-core composting once. Bones have to get really ‘hot’ to break down. I still compost, just on a smaller scale these days.

The coffin (or simple shawl — or cardboard box) is 100% natural.
