The Women’s National Basketball Association and the Women’s National Basketball Players struck an eight-year labor deal that includes boosting the average player salary to six figures, guaranteeing full pay during maternity leave and providing better travel conditions. Cathy Engelbert, the commissioner of the WNBA, was instrumental in negotiating the collective bargaining agreement. A core part of the vision is to help catapult WNBA’s players like Candace Parker and Sue Bird into global superstardom, akin to the way LeBron James and Steph Curry have become household names.

Raise salaries and benefits, _then_ figure out how to get people to buy your product.....clever......

(Hint: don’t do this with _your_ business!)

It isn’t a marketing problem.

The “buy your product” part is not really a factor for them, as the (real) NBA gives them a bunch of money. So the people attending and watching (real) basketball games are helping to pay their way...nice of them to do that, by the way!

No, the WNBA has a product problem. The product they are trying to sell is not worth the price.

All the “marketing” in the world can’t sell a product that sucks.

They would have to pay people to attend the games if they wanted to fill the seats.

That is a “value” below zero.

In a free market the players would have to pay the league to let them perform!

If you read the article(!), you find the depth of the problem.

On average (we’ve lost) over $10 million every year we’ve operated,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told the Associated Press in 2018.

When I worked in NYC, a good friend told me the NY WNBA team was upset initially that most of their fans were lesbians. However, they then realized this wasn't a problem and they started catering and playing to that fan base. It supposedly helped them early on, but they never broke out beyond that fan base, in part, because the team wasn't as exciting as the Knicks (even though the Knicks are AWFUL).

I believe most people want the best in life. Women's gymnastics is way better than men's gymnastics, Heart is a better band than REO Speedwagon, and Laura Ingraham is better than Bill O'Reilly. All the marketing in the world won't make inferior, superior.

Yes, men make up the primary group of sports fans. And men like men’s sports. Plus the product is inferior as you say.

I’d be willing to wager that a good high school boys team would wipe the floor playing against a WNBA team.

Spot on!

Perhaps this is an example of an empty pant suit. She was CEO at Deloitte. Reality strikes the political navigation expert. I thought she was smarter than this - At least smart enough to listen to smart people before making major decisions.

After their marketing efforts fail, that’s when the name-calling begins. You men are sexist pigs.

No, it’s called the marketplace. Your players are boring.

Here’s a marketing idea - have them play in bikinis. The men will watch then.

Yeh, Don Imus had it right about women’s BB whether college or pro. The WNBA should take guidance from successful women’s sports such as LGPA and tennis. Knock off the gangsta look, tattoos, etc. that would go a long way towards improving ratings, attendance, etc.
