SAN DIEGO — In a race against the clock, a San Diego lab is scrambling to get a COVID-19 vaccine out and on the market. As the days go by, Inovio Pharmaceuticals is getting closer to releasing the desperately needed vaccine against the deadly virus.
Inovio Pharmaceuticals, which is located in Sorrento Valley, has also created a vaccine for the Zika virus, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and the vaccine for Ebola.
Dr. Trevor Smith, who is the director of research and development at Inovio, said, "It's something we are trained to do, and the infrastructure is here and the expertise is in house."
When Chinese scientists released the genetic sequence on Jan. 9, Inovio researchers got to work immediately and within 3 hours they had a vaccine for coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it is now being referred to.
"We have an algorithm which we designed, and we put the DNA sequence into our algorithm and came up with the vaccine in that short amount of time," said Dr. Smith.
Tens of thousands in China have been quarantined and continue to suffer from the virus. That’s why scientists at Inovio Pharmaceuticals say they feel the sense of urgency to get the vaccine out.
The vaccine has been tested on mice and guinea pigs. It will next be tried on a group of human patients.
Scientists hope the vaccine will work like a piece of biological software. In other words, the vaccine will give the human body instructions to create the proper attack in the form of T-cells and antibodies against COVID-19.
If all goes as planned, the vaccine could be made available to the public by early this summer - which would be a record time frame for Inovio Pharmaceuticals.
Currently, an Inovio Pharmaceuticals lead researcher is in Sweden meeting with the World Health Organization to come up with the best plan of attack against COVID-19.
Coronavirus is a “type” of virus. Think of them in the virus world as “Cars.” There are many kinds of car brands. And within those brands are different models.
This is a virus. Of the brand Coronavirus. The model is COVid 19.
I don’t think they actually created a vaccine. What they probably did is reverse engineer a surface protein from the DNA. Who knows if it’s an accurate replica of the actual protein or if it’s close enough to provoke the proper immune response.
I’m sure, after they make enough, they can do testing. If it makes it to human testing, they can compare the antibodies created by their protein with the antibodies in people who have had this Wuflu type corona virus. If they are a close enough match, then they can proceed to making bulk vaccine.
That will take somewhat more than three hours.

yeah, but they didn’t claim that it actually works, right? because that would, you know, take lots of testing on people and stuff ...
The only flu shot I ever had was the Swine Flu shot, and the more I learn, the more I think it was the trigger for CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome) that I’ve been suffering with for over 35 years.
Because of it, I lost my job, my car, my apartment, my credit and a husband within 18 months of onset. I refuse to have another shot.
I’ll just use Universal Precautions, thanks. They can keep their vaccine.
We’ve been looking for a vaccine for the common cold forever and can’t get one done. This is similar, so don’t hold your breath that this 3 hour vaccine miracle will pan out.

IOW, instead of telling China about it they’ve sat on it for over a month as people died. A simple act of kindness lost out to $$$$$$.
The one listed on Lysol is a different strain. Granted, it can’t hurt to spray it around.
You need to test this stuff first.
The last time someone made a vaccine for SARS (in this family of viruses) people who had it nearly died from the common cold variant of coronavirus when they were infected with it later on.

SARS is another Coronavirus, vaccines caused as much damage as the disease.

See 58. SARS and COVID-19 are both coronaviruses, but COVID is FAR more easily spread.
