Is the Pac-12 still a Power Five conference? After another coach got poached, it's a fair question
Yahoo ^ | February 12, 2020 | Dan Wetzel

It’s called the Power Five — the five biggest conferences in college athletics in general, and college football (which pays the bills) in specific. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC.

Increasingly, and without an end in sight, that characterization sounds like a polite form of inclusion than anything based in reality.

The Pac-12 has a big problem — Big Ten for one. SEC, for another. The gap between the financial resources of those conferences (and to a lesser degree the ACC and Big 12) and their western “peer” is so great that equal footing appears to be a fleeting mirage.

In theory they are considered equals. Out in the streets, this is high-majors and mid-majors, bullies and victims.

Tuesday brought the starkest example yet, when Michigan State went and hired Colorado’s head coach, Mel Tucker, when he reportedly agreed to more than double his salary of about $2.6 million. Moreover, at MSU, his pool of money to hire assistant coaches is expected to be double the $3.2 million he had to allocate at CU. MSU is even paying $3 million to Colorado to take care of Tucker’s buy-out. It’s basically raining Spartan green everywhere.

A desperate MSU reportedly offered an unproven coach $5.3 million per year

That’s hardly on the Pac 12

That’s idiocy on behalf of a member of The Big Ten

He’ll get crushed in that division

I think the real problem for the PAC-12 is that I’m asleep when they start their games. They have some historically strong programs: UCLA, Arizona, Arkansas. Things change. The Big East was a big deal, and withered to nothing. Now it’s coming back.

I don’t know... I’ve noticed when I’ve watched USC or UCLA on tv there’s a lot of empty seats. I would suggest that the mountain state schools such as ASU, AU, UC, Utah join the Big Twelve. Personally, only half joking, I expect California high schools and colleges to convert to flag football in the near future....

In basketball San Diego State is undefeated at 25-0. They are ranked fourth. Oregon well below them At number 2 Gonzaga from Spokane. UCLA number 102.

In the last two years SD beat Arizona State, UCLA and Stanford in football and lost to Stanford i a return match.

But this is a reflection of the loss of status by the PAC-12.

UCLA and USC not what they used to be. Cal down. This year Stanford down. In baseball Irvine is a better bet than UCLA or UYSCto go to the NCAAs.

The coach from SD just recently retired Rocky Long 10 bowl games in a row,. Surprised no one is picking him up as D-coordinator or even head coach.

“The conference is getting killed by a mediocre USC program. That is the only program that might draw national interest.

I didn’t know the University of South Carolina was in the PAC-12?

OH! Southern Cal.

One PAC-12 Football Championship in ten years

Basketball, no league championships in 35 years.

Baseball, no league Championships in 18 years.

A better argument could be made for Stanford / UDUB for mediocre. UCLA has been right there with USC leading the decline in the League. Mind you there is a wide disparity in Academic requirements and cash (legit and unlegit) that has fueled this as well.

I envision Baylor or TCU joining West Virginia in the SEC. Kansas has a shot at joining the Big 10. The others are probably spicing up Conference USA or the AAC.

PAC-12 schools have all been lectured about toxic masculinity which is why they won’t tackle.

Weather in PAC-12 cities, except for WAZZU, is really nice during football season. UCLA and USC are in areas you don’t want to be in at night.

No one has better facilities than Oregon. Several years ago, some Michigan alum talked about how much their alums contribute and no PAC-10 team could compete financially; then I mentioned Phil Knight of Nike.
