Today, President Donald J. Trump signed the Executive Order on Strengthening National Resilience through Responsible Use of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Services, which directs the Federal Government to develop guidance that mitigates the risks of disruption to critical infrastructure that rely on PNT services. President Trump is committed to protecting and building a more resilient America. As the first nation to take this action, President Trump is advancing America’s leadership in emerging technologies and securing infrastructure vital to national security, commercial industry, and our everyday lives. PNT service, such as U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), is among the most used utilities in the world. Americans rely on it every day for a variety of purposes ranging from electricity to smartphone applications. This action by the President will help to ensure that the United States maintains uninterrupted access to essential services that rely on PNT.

This is the interesting part to me

(i) Within 180 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Commerce shall make available a GNSS-independent source of Coordinated Universal Time, to support the needs of critical infrastructure owners and operators, for the public and private sectors to access.

Since GPS is the distribution system for timing for so many applications and services today, it will be interesting to see what alternative distribution system for timing is developed. In the old days, one would synch up to the USNO atomic clocks by hard line modem, and in the really old days, you would tune in a to the HF broadcast on a radio receiver and set your watch to the metronome.

Speaking of time, NIST recently did a major revamp of their "what time is it?" page. I like the new revisions.

Good - POTUS Trump is looking out for our critical infrastructure, so that natural and terrorist events cannot disrupt our economy at this critical chokepoint.

Does anyone know if we have a similar plan of action to safeguard and secure the electrical grid? That is incredibly critical - no electricity means no medicines, no refrigeration of food, no petroleum production, no industrial production, very limited recharging of phones and other common electronic devices, no pumping of water, etc. It is WAY MORE critical as the entire GPS system (oh, and no electricity disables the GPS system also), and has to be reliable or we are done.
