Update on my Prostate Cancer
Self | Feb 11, 2020 | FWDude

Posted on 02/11/2020 7:44:24 PM PST by fwdude

Last summer I posted about my prostate cancer predicament. Opted for radical prostatectomy (robotic) and found a good surgeon in the North Dallas/Irving area.

Three month follow up PSA: 0.04, just below “undetectable” Six month follow up PSA: >0.02, lower limit of “undetectable”

Praise God! I was really having a hard year because of this. Now almost completely continent, and “It” is coming back :)

Thanks to FReepers who’ve been praying and counseling me on this trial.

Yep, off of processed sugars, all I get is what is in the few fruits (berries) that I eat. I’m not ready to fast yet, though my health team is recommending that as well. Bone broth fast to start.

How long a fast is effective, do you think?

I believe you. My husband's PSA was normal but the digital was slightly different.

BOTH protocols should be done.

You can do intermitten fasting, or every other day fasting. But I recommend trying a 30 day fast just to see if you can pull it off.

Saw a video once, a good while back though, where a doctor did about 25 days, then just practiced intermittent fasting and a keto diet. Malignant moles/skin growths got red, turned purple, then fell off after 6 months.

Not only was the PSA high, it was accelerating. Post-op pathology showed several small areas of Gleason score 3+3 and a smaller area of 3+4. That contradicted my last biopsy of 4+3.

Fast from time to time as well. Causes body to eat bad cells.

First I have heard of this idea. That actually sounds plausible. Where did you hear of this notion?

PSA tests quarterly for the first year. Then scale back to twice a year and then annually, assuming the readings stay low.

I had no symptoms at all either. As i mentioned before, my rising PSA was the only indication that anything was askew. Doctors really had to hunt for any cancer - the first two biopsies came back negative about 4 years ago. Only an MRI-guided biopsy the third time was able to find a small piece of one core that was minimal cancer of Gleason 3+3. Active surveillance until rising PSA changed my action plan.

Is fasting considered just water, or is even that withheld?

I’ve heard people talk about fasts but they mean just solid food, and still drink tea or dilute juices. I’m new to this so don’t know the jargon.

Look up fasting and autophagy, the latter the spell check is telling me I’m misspelling, but should be the correct spelling.

There are different ways to fast, but I recommend for a first time to go on a straight water fast. You could start it slow with hot teas and coffee (hot drinks fill me up), and then ween yourself of it to just water. The goal is to enter autophagy as quickly as possible and remain in it for as long as possible in a zero calorie state, so all your body is doing is repairing cells and targeting defective cells.

Ordinarily though, that’s freaking tough, so I also do just a hot tea/coffee fast, even hot chocolate this past month. The coco is low calorie with no carbs, received as a gift (though I’m travelling at the moment so I’ll have to check in a few days to get you the name of the brand). I use almond milk for it, which is also just 2 carbs per cup, 60 calories total. The hot drinks allow you to get the feeling of being filled up without loading up on a lot of calories. I’ll usually do a week and then “cheat” by having a keto meal... except today, where I had some cookies.

Prostatectomies are not much fun. I stayed with my Dad and invalid Mom, kept house and cooked for weeks after his. Then a year later one of my widowed fellow Gideons had to go through it, so I had the opportunity of doing the same for him. That was 1992 and 1993, respectively.

My Mom passed on eight years later, then my Dad of heat failurea few months after, having fulfilled his wedding vows for 65 years.

My Gideon pal survived, remarried happily, and is still going on as of this moment.

More happy days for you, my FRiend, I can appreciate what you've been through. I hope this has given you time to think about firming up your relationship to our Creator, to love and serve Him always.

that’s the key-acceleration-prostate cancer is usually a very slow growth cancer and most men who have it will die from something else-when they check cadavers of men in their 80s and 90s most men have some prostate cancer-my dad had it for 35 years, lived to 90 and the approach was watch and wait=docs explained PSA gives many false positives and biopsies and surgery are invasive -I know one elderly gentleman who got seriously ill from infection after biopsy-no cancer was found

but congrats to original poster
