“It’s a new virus. We don’t know much about it, and therefore we’re all concerned to make certain it doesn’t evolve into something even worse,” said Lipkin, speaking from his New York home on a 14-day self-quarantine after traveling to China to work on the outbreak.
Lipkin, the director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, was in Guangzhou and Beijing, where he advised local health officials. He said he did not travel to the city where the coronavirus emerged, Wuhan in central China, because it would have been more difficult to return to the U.S.
“We don’t know much about its transmissibility. We don’t necessarily have accurate diagnostic tests. And we don’t really know where the outbreak is going to go,”
The illness also is able to spread before symptoms materialize. Health officials estimate about 20% of patients become severely sick, leading to pneumonia and respiratory failure.
Lipkin said he estimates the mortality rate of the coronavirus will ultimately be less than 1%.
But the figure is “speculative” because more antibody tests need to be conducted “so we can figure out who might have been infected but not manifested signs of disease,” he said.

According to this, your own immune system reacting to it is mostly what makes it lethal.
Until reading that I didn't pay much attention to the idea that it came out of a weapons lab due to the long time between infection and symptoms. If you consider something that was still in development to shorten that time between the two getting loose, it's a different set of factors to consider.

As I have said many times, I had a family member die from these conditions related to the flu.
Everyone should know and have on hand what they want to use to deal with the cytokine storm. It can lead to sepsis detroying organs..which the doctors said was like bleeding inside out...or something equally horrifying. I cant remember.
In our case, death was less than 4 days. This virus doesnt appear to be killing people that fast. I suspect if you survive you will get signicant lung damage.

There. Wouldn’t that be better? I noticed that Bloomberg flushed loads of propaganda into the media today. It’s comical, really, as it downplays the epidemic more than the PRC does.
True to a large extent but does it usually take so long to trigger a major immune system response? I thought the immune system not reacting for quite some time was unusual but maybe not.

Back in the 1990s, I had the Asian flu and dropped to 85 lbs. I was a healthy 24 year old, healthy woman and this almost killed me. It took me over 2 months to be back to work and another 2 months to get my strength back.
I don’t remember seeing anyone sick on my planes and am always careful to wash my hands and not touch mouth, nose or eyes.
If coronavirus gets a foothold here and takes off, God help us.
