Sources: Luke Fickell will not be Michigan State's next head coach

Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell has decided to stay with the program, according to sources familiar with the situation. Fickell interviewed with Michigan State officials at his home on Sunday morning and has widely been considered the favorite to replace his mentor, Mark Dantonio, as the Spartans’ head coach.

Fickell was never formally offered the job. But when State officials left the meeting near noontime on Sunday, there was an understanding that if Fickell wanted the job, it was his.

MSU officials flew back to East Lansing on Sunday facing a search that’s appearing to be destined to be defined by who they’ve missed out on. So far, those known to have declined interest in the job include Colorado’s Mel Tucker, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell and now Fickell. This doesn’t count the high-profile candidates that outside search firm executive Glenn Sugiyama, who is running the search, reached out to early on and who declined interest.

There must be some very dark clouds over Lansing as all the names mentioned as potential hires have turned down the job. Is MSU going to be nailed by the NCAA?

Well if the NCAA is gonna hammer MSU, that means Liberty University will be going on probation.

I hope eventually all these experts will quit throwing Matt Campbell’s name into the mix every time there’s a football coach opening somewhere.

He’s obviously a man of his word who has said he wants to win a conference title at ISU - and means it. Whether he will or not remains to be seen, but he’s not going anywhere soon.

A few years ago MSU was known for a strong no nonsense approach to winning. Then there was some sort of gender abuse scandal that went all the way up to the very top of the pecking order. Sense then, it is sort of a no go zone. Like, stay away.

The primary goal, each season is to defeat UofM.

The logical thing for MSU to do is hire Urban Meyer.

That’s what I’m thinking too. It’s a name program and it’s in the Big Ten. Coach Dantonio got his money and left town in a hurry.

Who’d want to coach at MSU? Three almost certain losses each year: PSU, OSU, and Michigan.

If so, those dark days are behind, Luke has weathered the storm before. I can’t imagine what MSU will navigate if rumors are an indication of the problems there. Tattoo gate is nothing compared to the PSU or MSU.

Lot's of problems, not the least of which is a bunch of nattering PC nabobs that are the Bd. of Trustees.

Toss in the Nassar scandal,

the Blackwell lawsuit for wrongful termination,

the Robertson recruitment (high school sexual abuse, and more),

an Athletic director in waaaay over his head (zero experience),

the most recent head coach who received a 4.5 million dollar retention bonus and quit 2 weeks later (the day before recruit signing day),

and a campus culture that is Ivy league snowflake worthy and you are probably going to have a problem attracting quality coaches.
