In recent days, satellite maps have displayed alarming levels of SO2 mass around Wuhan the Chinese city suspected to be the origin of the deadly virus. Furthermore, high levels of SO2 were also found over the city of Chongqing which is also under quarantine.
Large amounts of sulfur dioxide are released when bodies are cremated or when medical waste is incinerated, scientists say. But a Twitter user raised an alarm after finding the elevated levels of the compound on a weather app, suggesting that it could be the result of dead bodies being burned on the outskirts of the city.
The Chinese government has ordered bodies of coronavirus victims to be cremated immediately upon death. They have also decreed that funerals must be low profile in order to prevent large public gatherings.
Earlier this month, China's National Health Commission advised that the bodies should be "cremated close by and immediately."
A screenshot from a live map by Czech-based weather service Windy shows SO2 levels in Wuhan at a staggering 1,350 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) over the weekend. To put things in perspective, a dosage of 500 µg/m3 of SO2 should not be exceeded for more than 10 minutes, as per the World Health Organization (WHO). A 15-minute exposure to 533 µg/m3 sulfur dioxide is considered to be 'high' by the UK government.

And sulfur dioxide is also a product of coal. Much of China switched from coal to other fuel recently. An interruption in fuel supply could easily explain the SO2 levels.
Articles discussing the factory closures:
“Except the factories there are closed, yes?”
Plus, the elevated levels are in the vicinity of the virus epicenter. If it was only industrial pollution, then there shouldn’t be a big difference between the Wuhan levels and the rest of China.
Is it close to this city?
From the article
Furthermore, high levels of SO2 were also found over the city of Chongqing which is also under quarantine.
Yes

Except the levels of SO2 near Wuhan the epicenter of the virus have increased recently compared to the rest of China. In your scenario Wuhan shouldn’t be showing a noticeable increase in levels and should be roughly the same, while other parts of China show a decrease.
Clue #1: Windy.com. does not track sulfur dioxide, and none of the Windy.com's maps for Wuhan show anything close to the image twitter.
(Am I the only Freeper who checks anc evaluates sources anymore?)
Currently, the real time World Air Quality Project shows Wuhan's SO2 level in EPA AQI equivalence as a 6, varying between 3 and 14. I don't know how to convert that to other measures. From the WACQ data, Wuhan's SO2 pollution looks pretty low compared to the other types.
I saw you had mentioned plant closures. Thats why I tagged you.
Yes. Why would they try to treat those people who are being carried away, screaming? Who would ever know what really happened to them? And getting rid of them “early” saves money, as well as helps to reduce the potential spreading of the virus.
This country has a history of un-apologetically murdering 60-120 million of its own citizens for political reasons.
I don’t think it is a stretch to think they would murder millions of their own people to keep from looking bad to the outside world.
Coal power plants are typically the largest source of sulphur dixide emissions. No doubt those are all still operating.

Nicely played
SEE YOU THINK THAT’S A VIDEO FROM A MOVIE BUT IT’S REAL LIFE!!!
:)
Thanks. seen that movie bunch of times and is hysterical.
Forget about that scene.
Much more reflective of what’s going on now than the nuke one.
According to the Epoch Times, the crematoria were handling 4-5 times the usual cremation volume per day. Few of those cremated were officially confirmed as coronavirus cases.
The newspaper offered insight into a larger funeral home in Hankou, a Wuhan neighborhood, which it estimated had the capacity to burn 576 people per day. You Hu told the Epoch Times that the backlog of people waiting to be cremated was not due to lack of space in the burners, but lack of sufficient transportation and collapsing staff numbers, as few were sleeping or taking breaks. Due to transportation and staff limits, the Epoch Times estimated that the Hankou crematorium was burning 225 corpses a day.
