I see nothing in the press about it!
I like him second only to Genghis Khan. My opinions are not very well liked, though. ;)
“I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are.” -W.T. Sherman
200 years ago is still supposed to be stuff from George Washington’s time.
This is just so weird.
If the South had him, they would have won. After Stonewall died, the writing was on the wall..
You people of the South don’t know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization!
You people speak so lightly of war; you don’t know what you’re talking about. War is a terrible thing!
You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it
Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make.
You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth right at your doors. You are bound to fail.
Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with.
At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.
-Comments to Prof. David F. Boyd at the Louisiana State Seminary (24 December 1860), as quoted in The Civil War : A Book of Quotations (2004) by Robert Blaisdell. Also quoted in The Civil War: A Narrative (1986) by Shelby Foote, p. 58.
Didn’t he leave a mansion / plantation alone, because he promised a lady he would always protect her?
He invented the tank.
If Stonewall had not been accidentally shot by a young picket, the South would have won the war. I don’t think Sherman was his intellectual and tactical equal, but Sherman made up the difference with cruelty.
Tanks for letting us know! :-)
He is has a long time to find out from personal experience if war and hell really are the same.
” Sherman made up the difference with cruelty.”
Yup. The other “infamous” thing he did is what he said about liberal reporters as he WISHED every reporter was dead as they kept reporting his location in the papers.
he was far ahead of his time
I learned that on a Monk episode.
Tell me about it, a second ago it seemed I was worrying about Y2K as the year changed from 1999 to 2000, and poof, all of a sudden it’s 20 years later, 100 years after prohibition went into effect, what the hell? 100 years ago use to be Mark Twain Huckleberry Finn years in the 1800s!
ROTFL
He did what he had to do.
Sherman was teaching at the seminary, if I remember corectly.
Not a popular name in Atlanta...
