flu can kill by causing the organs to shut down via sepsis.
years ago a Doctor told us it was like bleeding inside out...or something like that. I was too traumatized to really remember..but it was horrifying.
So perhaps that is they are treating. I saw a diagram of what this virus does and it involved sepsis.
That's standard for most viruses, but anti-viral meds can help. I don't think anti-virals worked for SARS or MERS, so they might not work for this coronavirus either.

true of about 99.99% of viral infections ... very, very few antiviral medications exist and those that exist are very specific to the virus ...
