The real hunt for Red October: Major US operation to track deadly Russian subs lasted for weeks off the East Coast but found nothing as US Navy warns the waters are no longer a 'safe haven'

The U.S. Navy has spent weeks trawling the North Atlantic in the hunt for a deadly Russian submarine that was known to have deployed into the waters off the East Coast of the United States.

The Project 885 Yasen class guided missile submarine Severodvinsk is built from the very latest in Russian technology and was thought to be just a few hundred miles away from the North American coastline in the fall of 2019.

Such was the worry of the U.S. military, the search involved a large number of Navy submarines, ships, and maritime patrol aircraft, all of which proved fruitless after the sub remained undetected throughout, according to The Drive.

The vessel, which can carry up to 40 Kalibr missiles, among other weapons, is known for having an especially low acoustic signature and proves especially difficult to pick up on all manner of sophisticated detection equipment including Sonar.

Hmmmm....remember the old joke the Kremlin knew where their subs were by tracking the location of P-3 Orion aircraft.

“Hmmmm....remember the old joke the Kremlin knew where their subs were by tracking the location of P-3 Orion aircraft.”

Is the Navy replacing the old P-3 with a newer and larger plane?

I seem to recall that in “The Hunt for Red October” they didn’t find anything either...as far as the world knew.

Most likely the Russian boomer has a USN fast attack tailing it.

Yep. The P-8A. And it’s far superior to the P-3.

And the “joke” about the Soviets tracking P-3’s to know where their subs were is not really a joke... It was a quote is attributed to their Admiral Gorskov.

I miss the good old days where we tracked their subs by the radiation trail they left behind. 😆

Thanks for the info. We have recently met 2 women whose husbands flew the P-3, and their husbands took retirement versus the learning challenge of the P-8 A.

Ironically, the daughter of another woman is in flight school for the bigger plane and is loving it.

Wait. You mean that O’Bummer’s implementation of men in high heels and dresses in top command positions hasn’t worked out?

P-8A is quite an aircraft.

Not nearly enough of them though. Something around 100 are planned, but they replace several hundred P-3s, (700 built) another 188 carrier capable S-3 Vikings.

Sadly, we are a shadow of our previous anti sub Arsenal.

All helos and Boeing 737 variants going forward. Underwater drones in testing.

USN retired all the Hoovers, and MAD proved ineffective with the deeper diving Soviet boats.

the navy is playing for more budget. the most probable reason that we couldn’t find that sub is because it wasn’t there.

in fact, it’s probably more likely that we couldn’t find it because it had blown itself up (as russian subs are known to do) than because of advanced russian technology (that actually works) — if only because the likelihood of advanced russian technology is nearly zero.

That is what I was thinking. It is probably in pieces laying about 4000’ BELOW sea level.

I have a friend who was an engineer on a nuclear sub.

The stories he can tell about Russian subs leave me with little worry that they are much of a threat.

ASW has been decimated in the USN. Orions are being replaced with 737s. S-3 Vikings are gone too. And the number of squadrons is pitiful.

As a former cold war era ex-navy type who was heavily involved in ASW ops, I am so sorry to hear you say that.

Original story from the war zone:
dmiral Warns America's East Coast Is No Longer A "Safe Haven" Thanks To Russian Subs
Increased Russian sub activity means that the Navy no longer views sailing off the East Coast or across the Atlantic to be "uncontested" movements.
