A North Carolina woman's innovative thinking saved her life when her hands became trapped while changing a tire on the side of the highway Sunday night.
Advertisement The 54-year-old woman, whom officials haven't named, was traveling on Interstate 95 in South Carolina when her car got a flat tire, according to Colleton County Fire Rescue. The woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, pulled over in the breakdown lane along the highway.
"She removed the flat tire and was replacing it with the spare when the jack slipped, causing the car to fall, crushing both of her hands between the tire and the fender," the fire department said in a statement.

Shame on any motorist that did not stop to help this woman.
The new jacks are far less safe than the old bumper jacks.
This was not NJ or NYC after all.
Adrenalin is a good motivator, she just did what had to be done. Hope she has a full recovery.
Yes, she must not have been visible, even in NJ someone would have stopped.

There is really no reason to put ones self in a position where they would be hurt if the jack did give out. When changing a tire then you don’t have to put your hands in places where they would be crushed.
I agree with you. But, when I have a daughter, I will make sure she is well versed in that, just in case.
If you don’t have a jacket and or block available putting the flat tire and especially rim under the car is always better than nothing
I wouldn't have wanted my wife to stop and attempt to assist this woman in changing her tire - it's too dangerous.
Of course, after she crushed her hands, this lady should have been helped.

So you’re just upset she didn’t have a white knight to change the tire for her. She should have had AAA
You’re responding to the wrong person.
ALWAYS:
1) Pull over to a Safe location being sure to keep the flat tyre on pavement NOT IN THE DIRT OR GRASS!
2) Put Vehicle in Park or 1st Gear and set the Parking Brake.
3) Block the good tyre (not the other side) whichever isn’t Flat in Front & Rear.
4) Before Jacking up the Car be sure to loosen the Lug Nuts a bit, then Jack up the Car.
5) While removing the Flat Tyre put the Spare under the Car between the Jack and Flat You’re changing so the Rim should under the Frame for Safety. Remove Lug Nuts and Flat Tyre.
6) Swap Spare out with Flat under Frame for Safety. Install Spare and snug down lugnuts.
7) Remove Spare from under Car and lower the Jack. Do a Final tightening of Lug Nuts after Car is on 4 wheels again.
8) QUICKLY load up Tools, Tyre Blocks and Flat Tyre the in Trunk.
9) Get the Flat fixed or replaced ASAP. Most Spares are Will Pops, they are made for TEMPORARY USE ONLY !!!
PS- Keep a few pairs of Medical type (blue) gloves to use so Your hands stay clean. They are available at Auto Parts stores or WalMart.
How could she possibly get either hand, let alone both caught under the flat?
That’s why I’ve always put the flat tire under once I take if off until I’m ready put the new one on and tighten it. If something slips it’s not going to come all the way down.
