I am certain the same has happened at my old school to sports trophies dating back 70+ years and likely the plaque I earned for a US Navy science fair award some 50 years ago as well. Quite frankly no one really cares after that much time. Those for whom some of these old trophies might have been significant may well be deceased, no longer live in the community or even are a distant memory for anyone.

Once Iowa school consolidations started, this was an issue for a lot of people. I know of one case where the trophies were given away to any alumni or descendant who asked for them, and the rest were sold to a junk dealer. The school building itself was torn down and the bricks used to control soil erosion on a local farm. In 25 more years, there will be no one left alive who won any of those trophies or walked the hallways.
