i am searching for a western film that i vaguely recall watching in the early 1960s.

two men (and a woman?) find themselves alone and stranded, without supplies or transportation, in the mexican desert in the late 19th century.

they walk and come across a railroad track. they follow the line and find an overturned two man handcar. they get the handcar back on the railroad track. then they operate the handcar until they get to a big city (vera cruz?). there is a gunfight of some sort, and they win the gun fight.

iirc, the movie has two famous tough-guy stars.

my recollection is that this movie is before the flight of the phoenix and possibly before lawrence of arabia.

i have looked in the usual places, but have not found the movie so far. thanks for any help or pointers.

Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster were in a movie called Vera Cruz. It’s been so long I can’t remember the particulars. You might check it out.

Made in 1954

During the Mexican Rebellion of 1866, an unsavory group of American adventurers are hired by the forces of Emperor Maximilian to escort a countess to Vera Cruz.

Vera Cruz was black and white in 1954 but then colorized I think by Turner Broadcasting. Even if it ain’t the right one, it’s good.

Vera Cruz IMDb link

After the American Civil War, mercenaries travel to Mexico to fight in their revolution for money. The former soldier and gentleman Benjamin Trane meets the gunman and killer Joe Erin and his men, and together they are hired by the Emperor Maximillian and the Marquis Henri de Labordere to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre to the harbor of Vera Cruz. Ben and Erin find that the stagecoach is transporting three million U.S. dollars in gold hidden below the seat, and they scheme to steal it. Along their journey, betrayals and incidents happen changing their initial intentions.

TRUE. But it has soldiers capture Rita Hayworth, then take others to the US due to their bravery under fire.

They lose their horses, then find a railroad pushchart, then there is a mutiny against Gary Cooper, the officer taking them to Cordura.
Gary Cooper as the officer, Van Heflin and Tab Hunter as the two “bad guys”.

THEY CAME TO CORDURA with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth.

...

I think that’s the film where Dick York tore up his back using the handcar.
