A Virginia Beach man is embracing a major challenge: Seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

It’s called the World Marathon Challenge.

“I’m feeling good. I’m looking forward to it,” said Ashoka Arora.

Ashoka Arora

Arora said he has run ultra-marathons - which are 100 miles - and he has completed a few Ironman races, but now he’s taking on a whole new challenge.

He said when he got into running, this was a bucket list item for him.

News 3 met up with up with the 58-year-old at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. He said it is his second favorite place to run next to First Landing State Park.

He owns the Nawab Indian Cuisine restaurants in Hampton Roads and when he’s not working, he’s working out.

Organizers said competitors will fly for a total of 68 hours and will be running 183 miles after the seven days.

“It’s going to be a little challenging in the heat. The cold should not be a problem,” said Arora.

He leaves Saturday and the first marathon is in Antarctica. Then, they fly to Cape Town, then Australia, Dubai, Madrid and Brazil. The final race is in Miami.

“It’s a mind game. It’s not as much of a physical effort more than half as mental,” said Arora.

Running seven marathons, in seven different countries with different weather conditions (humidity, temperature, land layout), and traveling between the runs over seven days, is a whole lot different than running an in location ultra. He’ll either get hurt and retire or drop dead. One less idiot. This guy’s a joke.

I understand the exercise habit. I always had physical jobs, that with my heathly eating habit (thanks to my wife), kept me quite fit. When I became a truck driver in 01 at age 47, I soon realized that I needed to maintain an exercise regimen. It would take 30-40 minutes. Some days I would miss, maybe once or twice a week. Sometimes I rode a bike.

I still try to stay with it, but at 65, I don’t push as hard. I’m 6’1” (shrunk an inch through the years), and weigh around 180. I’m not on any meds, and pass my CDL medical with good enough numbers to get a two year certificate every two years. That is not common according to the examiner.

Thank God for good health!

Running promotes the body’s natural production of an “endorphin”—leading to an addictive behavior. (Like opiate “painkiller” drugs). Another endorphin is excessive exposure to sunlight. (”Getting a tan”).

My former boss really “worked the system” with his county job. Ran every day. In charge of 40 people, he never took a sick day, was salaried at 6-figures, and seized every possible county perk to retire as a millionaire “public servant”.

The day after he retired, he was found on a jogging path—dead of a heart attack.

His wife has been left with a comfortable lump of government largess due to two compulsions.
