The post office has decided they will no longer bring packages to our home because it's to far from the road. They will only bring items they think will fit in my mailbox (and so far, they think none of them will)
I'm not really in the mood to run 20 miles one way to get a package.
when you google "large mail box" or what ever you get cardboard boxes. when I actually find something that will accept a decent sized package its 3-700 bucks. I would assume if it's not an official mailbox (approved and all) they won't use it.
I'm open to suggestions as to how to address this. The carrier says his hands are tied. he is no longer allowed to drive up my driveway.
Use a legal USPS mailbox, and hang it under the top of a custom container of the size you’ll need. The carrier can open the usual mailbox door to deliver letters as usual. When a package arrives, the carrier can swing a SIDE or BOTTOM door open for large packages. (Or hinge the rearmost corner of the legal mailbox to access the container underneath.
The big container (drum, rain barrel, dock box—mounted on end) serves as the mount for the legal mailbox. If they’re fussy, mount the whole thing on a 4x4, per their mounting instructions.
Build it gradually in sections, so the carrier gets accustomed to its functions.
Install a Plexiglass “window” facing the house, so you can tell if a package has been delivered. :)
Where I live, the USPS carriers will leave oversized items in a plastic garbage bag right by your mailbox. I keep a box of bags inside my mailbox for this purpose. We have a group of about 12 rural mailboxes in a row, and I have no had theft problems. Results may vary. You might need to give the postmaster a letter granting permission. If you are worried about expensive items being stolen, drive 20 miles to the PO, or ship by FedEx or UPS.

For Accountable mail items and oversized parcels (not postage due), the carrier must try to gain the attention of the recipient, which includes honking their horn, in order to get them to come to the vehicle. If the customer doesn’t come out and the house/delivery point is within 1/2 mile of the line of travel AND has a passable road, the carrier should attempt to deliver it. Otherwise, the carrier will leave PS Form 3849 and the customer will have to make arrangements to obtain the item.

they don’t even bring them any more. I was down there when he came by this afternoon. didn’t have the package. said “they won’t even send them out any more”
Thus we have reached a point where USPS only brings me junk mail. I should just remove the mail box all together.
I guess they can argue a road is not passable if they have to use reverse, but that is lame at best.
nothing the post office brings is important enough to drive 3 towns over to get.

would I rather pay 7 bucks for fedex over 4 for usps? hell yes if I don’t have to waste my time running to a post office 3 towns over and burning my own fuel. No one is paying me for that, but it seems I am paying them to deliver.
If a PO is your only option, then that will work, but I’d go with a PMB; there is a difference. UPS Stores and Mail Boxes, Etc. still offer them, and they accept all carriers and couriers. PO’s don’t, and they don’t accept larges or heavies (60# and up).

Maybe you have a local problem that will eventually get resolved.
Located on a dead end road, my mailbox is 600 feet from my front door because, “We won’t deliver on UNimproved (dirt) roads”. It’s so private, I could walk around all day in my underwear!
Once day, a newbie lady carrier drove the 600 feet, then walked 150 feet down my steep driveway to deliver a small package. (I was suitably attired). ;)
Another day, the usual carrier drove past me on his way to the end of that UNimproved roadway. (!)
At my winter home, the road is embedded coral-rock boulders. ‘Difficult to walk on—but mail IS delivered! As it’s a dead end, the mailtrucks must back up to turn around. :-/
Until your USPS deliveries are resolved, mount your legal mailbox on top of a box. Use a saber saw to cut out the bottom of the mailbox. ;)

Some guy at our HS did that back in ‘63 or ‘64, and it was a flood until the janitors got the water turned-off. School was out for the day and next day, until it was cleaned-up and repaired. We knew who did it, but no one ratted him out, either. We all got grilled by the admins.
We have the M80s out here in PA, at stands and store several weeks before the 4th, but they’re nowhere near what they were in the 60s. Those were like 1/4 sticks of dynamite. They’d blow most of your hand right off. I grew-up in Arlington Heights, ILL, 1956-71, after Family moved from WVa.
Locking (Push-button or turn to lock type) locking metal cabinet with hinged door facing the street, mounted on a concrete pad...Letter “Parcel Drop” on the door in large letters...Leave the door unlocked for the postal service...
Postman can turn the lock handle to lock the cabinet after he delivers...
You retain the key...Retrieve your parcels...It’s been done...Sounds like your postman is a reasonable guy; show him what you have in mind...Might cost 50-100$ for a used cabinet and lock...
Supervisors trail postal employees on their rounds looking for “rules” violations; may have been told by the super “no more” long walk deliveries...
In the rural area I grew up, some people used modified 55 gal oil drums for mail deliveries...
Yeah, that's a problem, but I envy you not living near a bunch of people.

We have the craziest mail delivery system I’ve ever had in any city or state. The mailman can be here at 8 AM or at 7 PM. The other day I saw a mail truck come by and stop at my mailbox at 9 AM. I had mail I wanted to go out but don’t put it out overnight. In an hour, I saw another mail truck come by and stopped at my mailbox. I do not believe they work for the post office - I believe they are contract drivers with PO trucks. Never the same driver.
People are having a terrible time in our city with envelopes being torn open, contents taken out and then the envelopes are part of the mail delivered to their street mailboxes. The powers that be say “they’re on it” but that remains to be seen. You don’t dare mail anything that looks like a greeting card as those may contain checks/cash or gift cards and I guess those are torn open just to see what may be inside.
I don’t think the PO can even pin it down to happening IN THE PO or in the mail truck on delivery or even at pick up!
I have valentines to send to grandchildren so I think I’ll follow your advice - just pick up the mailing envelopes for Fed Ex and go from there. Thanks...
