The Last Navarroite

The Last Navarroite

Navarro County, Texas, has been central to my family. Family names were all over the place: Lee, Hugghins, Eppler, Mayo, Spurrier all sprinkled among the county's towns: Corsicana, Kerens, Chatfield, Barry, Blooming Grove and all parts in between--

Though I, along with my mother move all over tarnation in the 1950s and early 1960s with my father in his construction careen along with those family members who worked for my dad. Yet we always came back to Navarro County to visit and/or recharge.

In 1966, mom and dad bought a house in Kerens to stay. As the years passed my dad and mom's generation passed away as did they in 1971 for dad and 2001 for mom. Others in the family moved away for school and jobs.

Nowadays there are none of my family names (Lee, Hugghins, Eppler, Mayo, Spurrier) left in Navarro County. They have all either moved or passed away. Yet I am still here at 72, the last of our family that remains.

In 2008 I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and while my doctor did not reveal his thought until years later, he believed I had less than a year to live. Yet I beat it and am alive today but now not totally out of the woods.

Yesterday I was scooped top and bottom where they found a mass that may be esophageal cancer. Strange what goes through you when told you may have a fatal disease-- The first thing that came to my mind was that my favorite actor, Humphrey Bogart, died from it. "If I have to go, at least it is a cool way to go."

After a sleepless night I have come to peace with it come what may. I will fight it with all my might. That said, I hope I can keep my spirits up and the black dog side away.

I will attempt to take the same line as Mark Twain in his later years when he said: "I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened."

So in closing, "Here's looking at you, Bogie--"

Amusing how much the left still hates on Roy Cohn (not to mention McCarthy WHO WAS RIGHT).

I had an uncle, good man, gone now, but a lib.

He would ALWAYS mention how we helped the Shah in Iran. Every Christmas “They had a democratic government blah blah”. And he’d always praise Jimmy Carter. “Only honest President”. Broken record!
