The Battle of Isandlwana. A Zulu army of roughly 20,000 warriors overrun a British Army force of about 1800 infantry, artillery and native troops. About 1300 of the British forces are killed. the Zulu's suffered between 1000 and 2500 casualties. The defeat at Isandlwana is the worst defeat suffered by the British Army at the hands of a Native fighting force.

Later that day, 4000 Zulus, that had not fought at Isandlwana, attacked a company of British soldiers at Rorks Drift. The station is about 6 miles West of Isandlwan. The British held the post with 32 killed or wounded while the Zulus lost around 850 men. This action is the basis for the 1964 movie Zulu.

love the flick. Some of the usual Hollywood mistakes, but a great movie.

Bad shooting too at Rorke’s Drift. The British fired 19,100 rounds and killed about 350 Zulu, and many of the dead Zulu were killed in hand-to-hand combat and not with firearms.

I liked the scene of the 1st Sgt not releasing ammo without an appropriate chit signed for the authorized dispensing of ammunition, with the ZULU hoards approaching the ramparts.

Typical office pogue.

Great movie.

I remember seeing it as a kid and it had me on the edge of my seat for the duration.

Bought the bluray last year. It holds up well.

Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders of Rorke’s Drift, seven of them to soldiers of the 2nd/24th Foot – the most ever received for a single action by one regiment. Also, four Distinguished Conduct medals.

Some think that the Brits went a little overboard with the medal presentations for Rorke’s Drift. Possibly to shade the disaster earlier in the day at Isandlwana.

I already know that I am going to be viciously attacked for the following comments but I am compelled to say them:

All of the problems of the world with regard to why they hate us so much are as follows:

The Brits got run out of this country twice. Then we foolishly bailed them out twice.

The Brits got run out of India.

The Brits got run out of China.

The Brits got run out of just about every country in Africa.

The Brits got run out of several Southeast Asian countries.

The Brits got run out of most Middle Eastern countries.

The Brits got run out of European countries.

T. E. Lawrence split up Iraq to the liking of the Brits, although he DID run Turkey out of the area if that is any consolation but the fact remains that Iraq is STILL in turmoil ever since the Brits left Iraq.

My point is that if we cut all ties with the Brits then the world would not hate us so much.

The Brits are the real imperialists in all of this. We simply want to do business with other countries.

The Brits tried to take over the whole world and eventually got run out of all of those countries where they tried to take control.

If all of that is not enough for you and if you have never met a Brit then trust me. Brits are the most haughty, arrogant people on the planet. They look down their noses at everyone including all Americans and consider us to be defiant ‘colonists.’ They still resent us for kicking them out of our country despite the fact that we bailed them out twice and actually a third time with the Falklands Islands.

On a more personal note, I would like to punch any Brit when he or she says, “across the pond!”
