A home security camera captured a touching scene earlier this week: An anonymous man in a service member's uniform carefully folding a flag that had been torn from its ropes and fallen. The passing man was dressed in fatigues and folded the flag in proper ceremonial style.

This simple act of kindness shows just how important the American flag is to our service members, and the inspirational footage is going viral on social media. It's already been shared thousands of times.

Now, the Hope Mills homeowner hopes to find the man and personally thank him.

Frankie Grandstaff, who posted the video on social media, said, "It's just the random act of kindness. He didn't need to do that. It was raining. The weather wasn't good. He could have just acted like he didn't see it and kept on driving."

Frankie Grandstaff said the act of kindness occurred Tuesday around 4:20 p.m. He had the flag at half staff in honor of the paratroopers killed in Afghanistan.

After moving to Hope Mills from West Virginia around five years ago, he said living near Ft. Bragg gave him a newfound appreciation for the flag and the military. He said he's grateful for the service of all the soldiers and their families and sends prayers for the deployed. That's why he proudly flies the flag. His mom gave it to him about six months ago, and he put it up the same day.

He wanted to send a message to the anonymous service member: "Thank you for taking care of my flag, and thank you for your service."

To all service members:

When someone says to you “Thank you for your service” tell them thanks and please choose very carefully when you vote our lives depend on it.

I went into a building recently to tell the guards about a torn and dangling American flag “flying” outside in a rainstorm. I’m sure from their concern that they were going to do something about it right away, plus it was a federal building!

Good for this man!

And not a single kneeling athlete in sight.

I have an honest question.

A neighbor of mine flies his flag and every year. It is weather-beaten and torn. I replace it with another flag. He does not know that I do that but I have reverence to our flag.

Should I give him the flag back or do what I have been doing and save them for when the Boy Scouts or Knights of Columbus have their ceremony?

I buy as many flags as I can after Memorial Day and the 4th of July. The stores discount them and I share them with others.

It’s the flags that get left up so long they’re faded and frayed that get me.

Especially when you see a giant example of these at the occasional car dealership.

To thini that, as their polls tell us, half that nation hates that man. And also the man he is honoring.

When I retired, it still “wasn’t allowed” to salute the flag while in mufti - I proudly ignored that silly rule.
