But with it firing a .338 cal round, it will be a ‘special supply ammo item’ with no NATO interchangeability. Or will NATO also change to .338. Why not just produce it in the standard 7.62mm?

It’s gonna be a real game changer for small unit tactics. I would love to see how they train the gun crews. This is definitely not grandpa’s old “60”.

Read the article. It’s convertible to .308, though I wonder how many parts you would have to swap out to accomplish that.

I dont know. Semi auto mag fed would be nice, but Im sure the price would be about the same as a good used car.

In comparison to the M2 (.50cal), which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 110 years, the MG 338 is approximately one-quarter the weight, and in a historic first, offers a man-portable solution with similar effective-range. Making
Similar effective range, maybe. Similar stopping power? Not even close. Especially at that effective range.
Compared to the 240, how easy is this guy to field strip and clean? Looking at the pictures, it's full of holes and overs and unders and crannys and nooks and all sorts of places that are hard to clean. Every single private is going to hate this system when the supply sergeant won't let them turn it in because it's not clean enough.

What the hell kind of machine is that? Looks like some Call of Duty kid’s wet dream.

Right, 7.62mm = .308 cal. Thanks. I saw the .308 but didn’t realize the conversion. My old WW2 history mind just thought of .30 cal.
