Even as the fight over charging sales tax for online retailers ensues in Congress, Americans still think sales tax is the most fair type of tax they pay. But theyre nearly as likely to see income tax as both the most (and least) fair type of tax today.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 39% of American Adults, when given four chief types of taxation, view a sales tax as the one that is most fair. Thirty percent (30%) rate an income tax as fairest, while eight percent (8%) feel that way about property taxes and 5% consider a payroll tax the most fair. Eighteen percent (18%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
The survey of 1,000 American Adults was conducted on September 6-7, 2017 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

49% of US citizens do not pay income tax, which generally means they dont pay any income tax to fund your state. This incentivizes them to continue to vote for candidates that will increase the income tax over other taxes, encouraging people to permanently leave (like Rush and Trump).
I fervently believe sales tax is the best way to go. You can minimize its effect by buying wisely for the long term and doing as much as you can yourself.
If a tax is an acceptable penalty, taxing only those who are immediately productive is a yoke that would make even Atlas Shrug.
And even fairer, private sales between people - not taxed because it’s already been taxed when it was bought new.

The income taxes basically mostly hit domestically produced products and drive up their costs/prices. Products produced in foreign lands arent impacted by American federal/state income taxes and consequently dont have that during up their costs/prices. This adds a competitive disadvantage to domestic production. Final sales taxes impact both domestic and foreign produced products and thus dont add an advantage to foreign production of goods.
Tariffs aren’t listed as a choice. Nor is resort to printing money.
I don’t appreciate having to pay sales tax on used books that I order from third parties on Amazon. For the longest time, no sales tax was charged, but they have since changed that policy, and other online used book sellers charge sales tax too. Why should anyone have to pay sales tax on used books that have already been taxed by the original buyer?
People are smart.
*facepalm*
there is no such thing as a fair tax, so the whole notion of a fairest tax is misleading, and probably intentionally so.
the problem is NOT the system of taxation, its the size and scope of government. if you fixed the ACTUAL problem, the manner in which we fund the government would be an afterthought.
having a discussion about the fairest tax is to play into the hands of the enemy.
So what do you think people on welfare should proportionately pay of any governmental costs?
I agree.
I am glad to be your POS.
You make it an honor. By the way, no one on welfare pays your states income tax, nor illegals or other who dont report their income, nor visitors driving through.
Enjoy your hell.
Yup. Its a CONSUMPTION TAX and affects everyone on an even per cent age basis. One bracket. Revenues collected from the seller are sent to local, state and federal entities. No 1040s. Consumers SEE the TAX AMOUNT and consumers might get a clue as to how much of their earnings are confiscated. Too many people only look at the net amount on their paychecks.
Conveniently avoided is the fairest taxes of them all.
It is NOT the Fair tax, if you must call it fair, it ain’t.
The HEAD TAX
Anybody with a human head pays the same tax.
The TARIFF TAX
Let other nations pay to fund our Govt.
Not when you have excise taxes on top of it.
In fact, the sales tax is applied to the excise tax.
The sales tax is universally regarded as regressive (hits the poor harder than the rich).
And by the way, so is forgiveness of student loans. All those lefties trying to sell themselves to the voters with that line should think about it a bit more. The more expensive your education, the more those lower down on the ladder would be helping you out.
Sales tax is the only way to get any contribution from the permanent underclass; while the “toilet paper tax” was unpopular in NJ, it made them contribute.
In the early days government was funded by tariffs and sin taxes.
And not a hidden value-added tax but an itemized sales tax entry on every receipt so people know how much of their money government is stealing from them.
All I know is that over 50% of my money is taxed and I am still driving on the same bad roads and now seeing homeless encampments everywhere. The politicians are doing well however.
