Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 - Mas que nada (from Eartha Kitt's "Something Special", 1967)

"Mas, que Nada!" is a song written and originally performed in 1963 by Jorge Ben on his debut album, which became Sérgio Mendes' signature song in his 1966 cover version.

Brazilians use Mas que nada (or just que nada) colloquially to disagree with someone. A fitting English translation might be a sarcastic "Yeah, right!".

Wait, wait, wait... Sergio Mendes has a cult following. He can’t even walk down the street in South America.

What’s happened to this group?

It used to be Sergio Mendez and the Brasil ‘66

then

Sergio Mendez and the Brasil ‘77

then

Sergio Mendez and the Brasil ‘88

I don’t think I’ve heard of Sergio Mendez and the Brasil ‘99?

If they continie, will they be named: Sergio Mendez and the Brasil ‘20?

Where is Sergio anyway?

Incredible group, a 60’s iconic sound (even when they became “Brasil 77”.

I like the guy shaking the container of salt.

He really gets into shaking salt.

Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago - I think maybe Brasil 2016?

It is too easy to re-imagine the whole scene with Schroeder on piano, Pigpen on bass, snoopy on guitar, Charlie Brown on drums Violet and Frieda doing vocals, and Linus holding that Pringles can and his blanket at the same time.

If you’ve never seen it, you have to see the “Hey Ya” version with that scene.

Fifty one years ago I showed my then girlfriend the album FOOL ON THE HILL, then the backside. Her face got red when she saw the “hill”.

I found that same album in a store not long ago and bought it. Unfortunately on the backside, the “hill” was covered with a round sticker.

Brasil 66 is probably my all-time favorite group -- sadly, there can be only one "favorite" among the many you like. And Mas Que Nada is my favorite song. The strong temptation is to translate the title as meaning "More than Anything", as it would be in Spanish, but it's actually Portuguese Brazilian slang meaning something like "No way, man". The song touts some hot new rhythm as being unbelievably irresistible.

Check out this modern version by Nossa. It's well worth a look.

A little music trivia: Lani Hall (girl on the right) is the wife of Herb Alpert. She was lead singer from 1966 to 1971.

I loved the style and energy of their music.
