Here are the RIGHT colors for 1972 (Blue-GOP/Red-Communist Demonrat), courtesy of Dave Leip.
Clip on youtube from either the 80 or
84 election—NBC News election coverage with Brokaw.Using the old
colors, it was a romp for Reagan:
“It is like a big swimming pool,
an ocean of blue...” And that was
evident early on.
In 84 Reagan even won MA.
As for back in 72, I was 10 then
here in MA and I remember the
bumper stickers from after then:
Nixon 49 America 1
Massachusetts: The One And Only
Don’t Blame Me, I’m From Massachusetts
“Wrong colors.”
Exactly! The FAKE NEWS switched the blue=friendlies from the GOP and gave it to the democRATS thus making the GOP the enemy force (in military lingo). The Republicans never objected, in typical RINO fashion.
Got that right!
(don’t get me started on the media changing the colors)
Yuk! I prefer red. It looks like democrats kicked our ass on your chart.
Amazingly the GOP won my otherwise solidly Dem county (Hudson) in 1972 and 1984. It also gave 10% of the vote to George Wallace in 1968, not so surprising as their was a lot of anti black backlash by the white Dems back then.
I looks like “electoralmap.net” straight up stole Leip’s map and reversed the colors. LOL.
I’m sure Leip would have changed them (unfortunately) but he can’t unless he wants to spend about a year changing a bunch of code.
Who would have been your choice for Nixon running mate in 1968? Reagan? Nixon’s “home state” was NY at that point.
What about in 1960?
Cabot Lodge Jr. in 1960 was a retarded choice, the dude that lost to Kennedy in a Republican year, brilliant! Were there any southern options?
