I ran across this while researching and it called to my mind the actions of some of my countrymen.
Cosmopolitan critics, men who are the friends of every country save their own. Benjamin Disraeli (180481), English statesman, author. Speech, 9 Nov. 1877, Guildhall, London
John Kerry.
Do you know any Cosmopolitan Critics?
You mean, by FR nick?
Haha!
And they'll none of 'em be missed they'll none of 'em be missed!
Hugh Hefner
“The idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone,
All Centuries but this, and every country but his own...”
from “The Mikado” by Gilbert & Sullivan
:^)
They never will be missed! :-)
The term rootless cosmopolitan was a Russian communist term aimed at jewish people.

“Ive got him on the list.....!”
Democrats who are the friends of every country save their own.
The next lines are:
“The lady from the provinces who dresses like a Guy,
Who doesn’t think she dances, but would rather like to try.”
Now, back when I was 12 when I memorized this song, I didn’t realize that the “lady from the provinces” was dressing up in a “Guy Fawkes Mask”.
I just figured that the song was about a Lesbian.
Who knows? Maybe it was! Ha Ha Ha!
I think it was a wink wink nod at such an situation, though the capitalized “Guy” does point to Fawkes. The thing is many in the audiences might not have caught on with out the music and or libretto in hand. It would be interesting to study how Guy Fawkes day was celebrated in GandS’s day. in understanding the lyric, especially the dancing part and references to a lady from the provinces who may be considered a bit “out of the loop” I’m guessing?
And so...my 12-year-old naughtiness may have been accurate? LOL! :-)
By the time I was in the 6th grade, I had The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, and Iolanthe completely memorized (including the dialogue and stage directions).
Needless to say, I had a somewhat lonely childhood.
Kind of like being a Trump Supporter in Massachusetts. LOL!
It’s a good thing I don’t rely upon others to supply me with my self-esteem! hahaha
“Needless to say, I had a somewhat lonely childhood.”
So you “frequently” felt like an “orphan, often, but only once”!
Often!
Of that there is no possible doubt whatever. :-)
