Jon is right about somethings, but also kind of uniformed. Curtis Mayfield was a soul singer/writer, but he evolved into funk. He's right about two of the songs, but, there is no such song as
Diamond in the Back by Curtis Mayfield. It's
Be Careful for What you Got by William DeVaughn.
They should have added War. And Betty Davis, one of the best, but little known.

I’d roll with George Clinton any day. His music brought a smile to my face on the darkest of days.

I went to the Funk Festival in the Cotton Bowl around 1979. Parliament- Funkadelic, Rick James, Bar-Kays, ConFunkShun, Brides of
Funkenstein. Maybe a couple others.

I’ll need to check the album credits for the Staple Singers. Steve Cropper and Donald “duck” Dunn were, along with Booker T. the studio band for most of the Stax hits. Duck was the funky bassist, Steve was the man with the tasty guitar chops.
Staples “Repect Yourself” is definitely funky.

Interesting thread - thanks!
Sadly, out of all the live bands I've seen over the years, the only "funk" bands were Ohio Players in '76 and Rick James in, maybe '89, (he was very late and much, much too high).
