Years ago, some sharp person here set me straight on how one gallon of fuel, approximately 8 lbs, could produce gases weighing more than the original fuel by combining with other atmospheric gases.
Now I read CA wants to ban all gas-powered lawn tools to include golf courses and athletic fields as one mower produces more pollution than 43 new cars driven 12,000 miles a year (516,000 miles total). Most lawn mowers are single cylinder and most cars are 4 cylinders but a great many are 6 or 8 and car cylinders are a much larger displacement than lawnmowers and blowers.
Granted, there are not as many clean air devices on a lawnmower, but lawnmowers certainly are not run as much as cars, so how is it possible that mowers create more pollution? If the technology exists to make cars so clean they are 43 more time less polluting, why can't a single or small multi-cylinder mower be cleaner? Why must they be banned?
Nice to know. I will be in the market for a battery weedeater this Spring.
One gasoline engine has POWER, which means speed, efficiency,
AND has multiple attachments:
blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, weed trimmer, snow blower, etc ALL IN ONE.
Plus the engine has a separate electric starter.
Electric SUCKS, it is for wimps.
About 30 years ago, a friend in Eugene, OR made the point that not every house needed a lawnmower. Things like that could be communal. We know how that ends up....
Because you can't ride a battery mower. You also can't get the same power as a walk-behind (e.g. Swisher) with batteries. Gasoline has much higher energy density than batteries.
Exactly. It's all about banning.
Hey, Palmer. Can’t you just step away from logic and reason for a moment, and embrace your inner unicorn and rainbows?
I thought that was implied.
Yet another appliance to be made outrageously expensive through regulation.
You said, “why”? Please report to your nearest regional People Republic of Kalafornia re-education center for further instructions.
It’s for the children.
... and your 2-cycle leaf blower likely died because of all the ethanol in the gasoline. Those little engines hate ethanol.
Yup, put three carbs on it over the years and rebuilt them several times. Finally the rod seized on the crank. Had the thing for 20+ years, can’t complain. Now I only use TruFuel on 2 stroke engines.
I have a 2.5 acre yard to mow (with many big trees) so buying a battery operated lawn mower is not an option. However, I do enjoy mowing the yard with my Ferris zero-turn lawnmower. The Ferris is about the size of a small tractor and with its duel gas tanks holding 11 gallons its bound to piss off enviro Nazis better than a burning tire. :) I love it!
However, I forgot to mention that I do have two battery -operated weed eaters.
>> You also can't get the same power as a walk-behind (e.g. Swisher) with batteries. <<
Yes, you can. Some battery mowers have as little as 18V motors, giving them a bad rep. But 80V motors are getting more and more common. So many FReepers have bad experiences with bleeding-edge tech, and then write it off permanently.

I can't vouch for them, but they do exist. Ryobi RY48110, for instance.
cars with catylitic converter produce more NOx than lawn mowers. Lawn mowers produce more CO C and CHx.
Non existent global warming has nothing to do with burning fuel.
They must be using the same CARB guy that bungled their diesel calculations some years ago for trucks at the ports.
I hear he started a gardening business and used gas powered blowers and mowers and did quite well. course, my hearing ain’t what it used to be,, but neither is the battle against climate change in california, the foremost of which is in need of a good flush of the stinky manure ponds of the state legislature in Stinkymento.
Because not everyone lives in the cookie cutter suburb houses that are jam-packed into each other on tiny lots.
I live in the country. I have garden and lawn tractors. My garden tractor pulls implements, my lawn tractors cut my 4 acres of grass.
Why do I have four acres of grass?
Because I want to.
In the land of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, what is it of anyone else’s business how I live and what I use to maintain my property?
I’m so sick of these people telling me/us what to do, how to live, who to love, who to hate, God isn’t real, there are 57 genders, and Islam is the religion of Peace.
Wait for the $5000 Dyson mower.
The only way a lawnmower produces more pollution than 43 cars is if the 43 cars are parked.
