“Patient Five” was in his late 50s when a trip to the doctors changed his life.
He had diabetes, and he had signed up for a study to see if taking a “statin” – a kind of cholesterol-lowering drug – might help. So far, so normal.
But soon after he began the treatment, his wife began to notice a sinister transformation. A previously reasonable man, he became explosively angry and – out of nowhere – developed a tendency for road rage. During one memorable episode, he warned his family to keep away, lest he put them in hospital.

Alarmed, the couple turned to the study’s organisers. “They were very hostile. They said that the two couldn’t possibly be related, that he needed to keep taking the medication, and that he should stay in the study,” says Golomb.
Ironically, by this point the patient was so cantankerous that he flatly ignored the doctors’ advice. “He swore roundly, stormed out of the office and stopped taking the drug immediately,” she says. Two weeks later, he had his personality back.
Others have not been so lucky. Over the years, Golomb has collected reports from patients across the United States – tales of broken marriages, destroyed careers, and a surprising number of men who have come unnervingly close to murdering their wives. In almost every case, the symptoms began when they started taking statins, then promptly returned to normal when they stopped; one man repeated this cycle five times before he realised what was going on.

I don’t think SSRI are the same as benzodiazepines. The act differently on the brain. benzodiazepines Are like Valium or Xanax. SSRI are different group targeting different brain mechanisms.

Well, statistically speaking, a little under half of them can rightly be called that.
I have been taking 20 mg Of Lipitor for at least 40 years daily at bedtime. The only thing the statin has done, for me, is to keep my cholesterol levels in good shape. My family has a history of heart disease and many heart caused deaths. I will not buy into this article and there have been others like it over the years. I can remember discussing this topic before, here, on free republic.

I actually envy your position. There is a drug available for everything nowadays, just view some TV or Internet advertising if you don’t believe it. If I was like you I would trust new pills to solve all of my (many) problems with confidence that my “doctors” and government are carefully monitoring everything for me. Must be nice.
I’ve sworn off statins as they almost made me lose my feet to nerve damage. Took them 5 years with no idea that could be the cause of neuropathy in my feet. Had days I could hardly walk. Two weeks after quitting them my feet improved remarkably. Some permanent damage already done but its now stabilized after a year off them.
I’d rather deal with slightly elevated cholesterol than that painful burning in my feet everyday.

Statins make my joints hurt like the dickens.
Have you informed your doctor of this? All statins do not do this. It is a serious side effect that warrants a medication change, if possible.
Depends upon the person. I have been on generic crestor for years, with none of the effects mentioned here. But my cholesterol and lips, etc., are great.
Children and adolescents should NEVER be on SSRIs.

60 patients out of millions is statistically significant only to those 60 patients. I’m sure you’re aware that when drug trials are conducted, ANY symptom the trial participants develop, must be included in that drug’s list of side effects. Headache? Doesn’t matter if it was caused by a screaming toddler or a knock on the head, if a participant experiences it while on the drug trial, it must be documented as a side effect. That’s why some “side effects” are listed in such small numbers in the drug information.
Having said that, there are always going to be some people who react badly to a drug. Some of us are truly put together differently than most. And some people are very suggestable.

SSRIs are NOT benzodiazepines! Entirely different class of meds, though some SSRIs are used to treat anxiety.
. I was taking generic Crestor for about 5 years and was primarily experiencing pain in my knees and shoulders which got worse over time. I quit taking them and within 2 weeks all of that pain was gone (along with nightmares and a general weak feeling I had the entire time I was on that drug).

So no - SSRI are not all benzodiazepines.
But WTF ever. You win. I said I’m not an expert and don’t use SSRI or Valium. I use alcohol, tobacco and firearms for my stress relief.
