I tried an open source OS upgrade on my Blackberry.
Turned out it was an actual blackberry, and the OS guy turned out to be Amish.
Okay, so, I stole it then handcrafted an adaption. Think of me as a carpenter.
Bad news for everyone on Windows 7 still. After January this year, Windows 7 is end of life and no longer supported by Microsoft. No more security patches and updates and soon it will be a virtual virus magnet. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since Windows 7 came out.
Main browser is Firefox, my backup browser in Opera and I sometimes use Chrome but not very often.
“I use Mint...very stable, like never crashes, unless u overload it and even that takes a hell of a lot to do that and it has probably been running for days, before.”
Me too... Is it overheating when overloaded? Run “watch sensors” in your command line and keep an eye on the temp. A whole lot of folks mistakenly complained about the fan noise when overloading. they complained about any fan noise period. Well, it is supposed to spool up to keep it cool when you are pushing it hard.
But because of these misguided complaints they configured the fan slower, so now it doesn’t spool up as soon as it should to stay ahead of heating issues. You can go change this configuration values to start cooling sooner when overloading in the “thermalD” file. I had to do this to mine because it is an HP, and HPs tend to run hot anyhow.
I am seriously considering installing Linux on an old PC that runs 7. My problem is that while I like Unix I can’t stand Linux. It is an OS designed by teenagers for teenagers. I might just bite the bullet and go with an Apple, at least then I get a real Unix OS, but Apples are pricey.
I’d do Linux one more time if I could find one with the csh as a default shell and without the colored fonts. I hate the colored fonts.
I use Chome with my Windows 7 and haven’t had any problem.
” Sure, if you don’t mind Microsoft virtually taking over your computer and only allowing you to do what they want you to do with it.
On top of that, it uses a gargantuan amount of resources, and ‘calls home’ to Redmond every few seconds to report your every keystroke and your browsing history.
Agreeing to their terms of service gives them permission to have full access to all of your files, and essentially puts them in complete control over your device.
No thank you!”
My sentiments exactly! But you forgot the most important fantastic win 10 features. The dependency on the internet, the dependency on the MS cloud, and the paid subscriptions for apps.
I am starting to think some of these folks around here must work for Microsoft. I would have to be paid very well to speak of the MS experience in a positive manner. :)
Try Mint Cinnamon 18.3, the newer 19.x has not quite been ironed out yet. It is a full GUI OS and apps now.

"Windows 10 begins 2020 hoping to turn a page on a bug-ridden 2019. Problems ranged from frustrating to limiting, chaotic to simply bizarre and Microsoft was even hit by a whistle-blower exposing the reasons for the increase in instability. But now 2020 is off to a rocky start as well."
"Picked up by the ever-reliable Windows Latest, Microsofts Windows 10 November update is causing significant problems by breaking core elements of File Explorer. These include file search, file transfers and being, as one user described, 'generally all around terrible'. Windows Latest notes these bugs are 'widely reported'."
Imagine how INCOMPETENT Microsoft is in relation to Apple IOS releases, esp. in light of the 1909 release-disaster.
That's ALL they had to worry about; in market share - AAPL DWARFS MSFT in IPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, ITunes, Apple Music...
Thank G_d MSFT is largely only 'managing' releases in in Windows for PC...
Install windows 10
For me it is the obsession to rewrite EVERYTHING and break stuff that was never broke or needed to be touched in the first place. Why? Just make only the minimal positive changes truly needing to be done.
It is almost like they break stuff on purpose so that they can have a reason to need a following update just to break even more stuff. It is one of the most unproductive irrational things I have ever seen in my life. If it ain’t broke then it don’t need fixing, just leave it alone.
That is one of the things I like about Linux, the updates are very minimal, only if and when absolutely needed, only if the user wants them and never mandatory, and they are improvements and not destructive to existing.
So how do I get Linux? Download?
I cannot risk losing all my files let alone the time it takes to fix Windows 10 just because Microsoft fired all the quality control people.
I don't use cloud. Anyone who loses files should have used a backup regimen.
It's Google spyware.
Thanks for this thread. Bkmk.
I've been thinking of switching to Linux for a long time myself. I'm glad to see it is working out for you. That is encouraging.
Also, good to see you posting.
