Of Course Men Aren’t Interested in Little Women
Naitonal Review ^ | January 2, 2020 | Kyle Smith

Posted on 01/02/2020 12:05:24 PM PST by C19fan

It’s a peculiar feature of our culture that men who behave in predictably masculine ways find themselves chastised and scolded for not being more feminine. This brings me to Little Women, which is not exactly packing in male ticket buyers. Why would it? No one expected women to turn up for Rambo: Last Blood, and no one seemed particularly interested in the male-female breakdown of the ticket sales for that one.

Yet op-ed writers keep pitching versions of the same strange thesis, which is that we should be cross with men for not buying tickets to Little Women. “Dear men who are afraid to see Little Women: you can do this,” says an op-ed in the Washington Post. I think the writer is here confusing the concept of fear with lack of interest or boredom. (I blanch at the prospect of going through my Aetna paperwork, but my guiding emotion is not fear.) “For the love of Marmee,” writes Monica Hesse of the WaPo, “won’t someone please organize a Meetup so these men can watch Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson go to the ball and lose their gloves?” I am sorry to inform Ms. Hesse that the United States is a signatory to the Geneva Convention and hence no American man can be forced to submit to this variant of the Ludovico Technique from A Clockwork Orange.

I was going to make a remark about “period piece,” but thought better of it.

Oh go for it. Women want us to be interested, so give 'em what they ask for.

My wife considers women to be more morally bankrupt than men, but men are just more overt about it. Men watch pr0n. Women read bodice rippers or 50 shades of gray.

Real women understand this about men and women - and don’t judge men. I’m no fan of this, but one guy I used to know has a friend that owns a topless bar. His own wife would pay for his “table dances” on his birthday, because she knew she was reaping the benefit of it when they got home.

No, my wife would not do that - nor would I want her to. But I’d prefer being married to someone like his wife than a woman that expected me to act like a woman.

One of my favorite ‘period dramas’ was called Austenland.

I read "Gone With the Wind" cover to cover. Rather enjoyed it.

“...so these men can watch Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson go to the ball and lose their gloves?”

Well, in those Victorian times, that was the same as their being...nekkid!

I watched Pride and Prejudice (the PBS series) with my wife because she wanted me to. And she watches James bond and The Expendables because I asked her to. We both found things to enjoy in the one we were asked to watch - but not much.

“No man has any business sitting through this”

My husband is fascinated that Bob Odenkirk is in “Little Women”, which is so out of character for him. But he certainly isn’t going to the movie to see Odenkirk. If he did, I would worry about him. LOL!

Oh, I don't know. I'm female and my idea of a great chick flick is Master & Commander. And my hubby likes the occasional typical chick flick if it's done well. Seems to me if it's a great story, told well, it'll find an audience.

How silly some women are! I am a woman. I like some movies and I do not like some movies. I certainly do NOT like movies that modify a story into a silly feminist propaganda film! I do not plan on seeing the movie. I did read the book as a child. I certainly do not WANT my husband to express a desire to see Little Women!

Having a history degree, I spent the movie ripping the inaccuracies. LOL

As I was reading your post, I was saying to myself..."hmm Bob Odenkirk...well that might be interes...." Then I got to the end of your post and stopped thinking about it.

They said the same thing about the Women's World Cup.

Even though the women took a larger percent of the receipts in prize money than the men's tournament, the women's tournament makes less money overall due to less demand.

It's just the way it is. We can't pass a law to make men attend womens' event, and then report it on their tax forms or face a Roberts tax.

Yet.

“ Um, the men are scarce because it takes place during the Civil War, lol. The father is off fighting.”

Did you see the movie?

Trust me the men are not characters in this movie. They certainly are in the original version. They are spoken of, revered and respected. When they do appear, they are obviously men.

Hell, I couldn’t finish that book as a child even after having it forced upon me as a must read classic. Yawn. (Xx here too)

Yup. Both hubby and I love that one.

But, once again, a great story well told.
