Syd Mead, the visionary futurist who worked on such classic fantasy/sci-fi films as Tron, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, died today in Pasadena. He was 86.
Roger Servick, his spouse and business partner of 40 years, told Deadline that Mead had been in failing health due to lymphoma cancer and he was undergoing treatment at City of Hope in Duarte, CA.
Servick, who was by Meads side when he died, said his last words were: Im done here. Theyre coming to take me back.
Meads art department credits include Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Aliens, Timecop, Mission: Impossible III, Elysium and Tomorrowland. He also appeared in numerous documentaries over the years.

Love TRON
“Roger Servick, HIS spouse”
And he just busted the doors of hell wide open. Too bad he couldn’t see a vision of his future.
You are surprised to find out that an artist that work in the movie industry is gay?
The most disappointing thing about The Future is that it doesn’t really exist.
There are no futuristic cities, no flying cars, thank God. There’s no cyborgs, no space stuff, none of that.
There’s just a bunch of dumb asses and liars, and for a short period of time, there were a couple of incredibly stupid looking cars on the road.
Also famous for prior work with US Steel and Ford ... probably couldve had some of these concepts in the real world if not for marketing divisions...
My hometown in 1975:
Buncha’ goofy bastards in blue jeans and flannel shirts drinking beer and talking to each other on CB radios.
My hometown in 2020:
Buncha’ goofy bastards in blue jeans and flannel shirts drinking beer and talking to each other on cellphones.
Holy crap you’re right!

I will go ahead and admit that, on the subject of phones, the current technology is far superior to what Captain Jame T. Kirk had, so at least there we did well.
But I personally hate my SMRT phone except for the camera.
It’s the human race. Human nature doesn’t change. What futurists get tied up with is essentially the set dressing. The sets change. The play is always the same. And when it comes to human nature the futurists almost always get it wrong because human nature is far less malleable than technology.

Not surprised, but I’ll never get used to seeing that in a sentence.
Because it is incorrect usage of the language, not unlike "Epstein killed himself." ;-)
Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time. I tried to watch BR 2049 but fell asleep after a half hour. Is it worth giving another chance or is the who movie as boring as the first half hour?
What’s the one where they come for you when you’re 25?
Worth giving it another chance IMO.
I don't think the Star Trek communicators were reliant on cell towers or a satellite network scattered across the galaxy. They may not have been able to download apps like Angry Birds, or capable of taking selfies, but I think they may have still had an edge on our smart phones.
The comms didn’t have access to all human knowledge and all human disknowledge though.
In that regard they are fairly powerful.
“Logan’s Run.” In the movie, it was 30.
Ah. They both have the word “run” in the title. Never saw Blade Runner. I like old film noir, etc.
If you like old film noir, you might like Blade Runner, as it has that feel to it.
