A Boston woman who pushed her two young children from the top of a parking garage and then killed herself in a double murder suicide has been identified.

A similar case has been brought before in Massachusetts where a young woman encouraged her boyfriend to kill himself.

It seems to be a common media portrayal that a man who murders his family members, and then kills himself is evil, scheming, and awful in just about every possible way. When a mother murders her children, and then kills herself the media portrays it as the sad consequence of mental illness. Both actions probably include a major component of mental illness, along with some evil motivations.
I think the media find it harder to imagine a mother killing her family than a father doing the same thing, a natural consequence of stereotypes assigned to men and women.

That does unfortunately make a sick kind of sense. What better way than to punish a person you helped make?

The prevailing sentiment is one of understanding, even sympathy, for whatever inner turmoil led to her ending the lives of her own children in such a brutal manner.
