A hard-boiled egg recall has expanded to products sold at Walmart and Trader Joe's following a deadly listeria outbreak.

Almark Foods broadened the recall to include all hard-boiled egg products manufactured at its facility in Gainesville, Georgia, due to potential listeria contamination.

The listeria outbreak has been linked to seven cases, including one death and four hospitalizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. The outbreak is contained to five states, but the recalled products were shipped nationwide.

The expanded recall includes popular brands and organic fare, like Egglands Best, Pete & Gerry's and Vital Farms.

Trader Joe's egg and potato salads were recalled, too, because Almark Foods provided broken egg whites used in their production.

Looks like all of ‘em: https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/almark-foods-expanded-recall-all-products-its-georgia-facility-due-possible-listeria-monocytogenes

Here’s the identification info:

“The affected product can be identified by viewing the printed “Best If Used By” date coding on the product package. If the “Best If Used By” code starts with the prefix “G”, the product was manufactured at the company’s Gainesville, Georgia facility and is subject to this recall. Products with the prefix “N” or “Y” are not subject to this recall. For Protein Kit products, consumers are advised to check the code on the actual egg package within the kit.”

Will not eat hard boiled eggs from the store. They usually look gross.

The article doesn't say, but:

Affected products have a "Best If Used By" date that starts with a G,

because the problems occurred at a plant in Gainesville, GA. It says they have a plant in North Carolina, so I would guess the greatest risk is from Georgia, east across the Gulf Coast.

People should be cautious. England’s Best and Lucerne are included. One death in Texas.

People associate Listeria with milk, but in fact, Listeria can be found in almost any environment. It’s frequently found in raw meat, poultry, milk, vegetables, soil, open water, animal feces, and other common locations. Listeria is also an incredibly durable strain of bacteria; it can survive refrigeration, deep freezing, wide pH ranges, high salt content environments, low moisture environments, and even oxygen-deprived anaerobic environments.

If you remember the Blue Bell ice cream recall in 2015 - the maker took a huge hit. They basically replaced their entire production line - and still found listeria in their plant afterwards! Its a tough bugger to control.

We buy potato salad sometimes. I’ll be sure to check for the G.

"Eggs are boiled and sterile, but contamination must have occurred after they were peeled or while they were sitting in buckets of salt water."

Right - but the eggs are boiled/cooked. Obviously a post processing issue. I wonder if washing the eggs before eating would be enough (and wouldn’t work when used in salads. I’ll stick with my carnivore diet thank you!)
