“”geezers who spent years destroying their bodies will dump another mountain of debt onto their grandchildren so they can live a few more years.””

WOW - nothing like hearing from a sanctimonious individual so concerned about another person. I hope you never need the understanding of others and meet with the same attitude! If you cared enough to listen, you’d see that some of the posters were diagnosed with debilitating diseases due to no action of their own.

Great Christmas spirit.

How odd that there should be a couple of FReepers with pulmonary fibrosis writing on this thread...From the experience with my husband’s COPD, you both have my empathy!

Emergen-C has always been useful - great to have in your cupboard. Do you live in the cold climate? My husband can’t get out except to doctor appointments but just to the car or to the doctor’s office if the air is really cold, he struggles more..I have to find a place to let him out before I park the car so he doesn’t have to walk too far to the door.

He has to do breathing treatments daily along with medications and if I introduced Emergen-C to the mix, he might throw it at me. It’s worth a try - I know I have some...

Take care.

I am a non- smoker and my lungs were excellent until a few years ago ,when I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis. My lungs are like those of a heavy lifetime smoker, and no reason to be like that, so they call it Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis(IPF). I have been on Esbriet the last few years. -Tom

And they docs had no idea of a cause? I quit 3 packs a day cold turkey about 15 years ago. Best thing I've ever done for myself. What pissed me off is that I continued smoking for years because I kept hearing how quitting was like withdrawing from herion. Who the hell wants to go through that?

Easiest thing I've ever done.

Absolutely - prayers to both FReepers who posted regarding their pulmonary fibrosis this evening...and to all others who are fighting through diseases this holiday season.

“”Idiopathic”” means no known cause....A person could go nuts going over everything they’ve ever done in their life to cause something like that. The medical community doesn’t know!

Non-smoker here, age 64 male. I find significant breathing benefit from vaporizor (some call it diffuser) with essential oils. Especially use Eucalyptus Oil. Run it every night for five hours or so til it runs out. Improved overall breathing and reduces snoring.

Can any freepers comment?

I am too. I recognize that it is a strong addictive habit that is very hard to break.

However, perhaps if you want to quit you should go visit someone dying of lung cancer to see what it is like. HORRIBLE. Or go sink in a pool and lay at the bottom until you cant stand it any longer and are gasping for breath. It might be an incentive. When my family member was dying I had to take her off oxygen mask to try to adjust something. She was asleep. She woke up gasping for breath like she was drowning. It scared the heck out of me. Damn near jumped out of my skin. I can still visualize it.

Then there are others that continue smoking while on oxygen until their dying day.

And others that can chain smoke the nastiest of the nastiest cigarettes and never get lung cancer.

I know what “idiopathic” means but I’m surprised they had zero guesses.

I could come down tomorrow with a lung disease and they can point to me living in German barracks 40 years ago and probable asbestos contamination.

There is always a guess, even if there is no support.

Exercise seemed to be very helpful, even with pulmonary fibrosis. The diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis hit me like a ton of bricks. I had a ct-scan and didn’t even get home before they were asking for my emergency contact. Typically there is a 3 year progressive timeline. As I said, I think mine happened from the hospital overdosing me on sulfa based antibiotics in December instead of outright cutting the lymph node off. While taking them I told my sister that I thought I might have to go to the hospital. I just saw this today. Some much is unknown. My family member hadn’t smoked for 40 years and then got lung cancer. Perhaps something got damaged and then being exposed to mold or diesel fuel for long periods of time made it grow.

I will probably get lung cancer from the idiots in the casino that blow it all over me without a thought that they could be killing people.

I have to get up and stand away and they can see me coughing and trying to avoid it..they don’t care. Don’t even try to blow it elsewhere.

When you consider how marijuana is used in a non filter form, specifically, deep inhalation into the lungs and held before exhaling, one can only imagine what the lungs are going to look like after even 20 years of legalized use.

And to think that the same advocates of marijuana were likely spearheading the demonizing of tobacco products.........

Agree. Though I am a non-smoker, It irks me to no end the misplaced finger waging of sanctimonious freedom-haters.

We all need to see how we have been manipulated to rob others of their right to self-determination.

Smokers are not the only ones who get lung cancer. And many smokers never get it. Blaming it on insurance costs ‘sharing’, that can apply to a multitude of things. That is how insurance works. If you excluded everyone who might need it, nobody would purchase it.

Not to mention there are MANY that the ‘public’ doesn’t do this too. Because it wouldn’t be “PC”. When we all know much health care costs goes along with all the PC lifestyles being pushed today.

What they DO go after, is everything that has been part of our everyday HISTORIC lifestyles.
I see a trend there.

They feel all godly pointing preaching others to stop living life they way we have historically been living. And to stop being meat eaters, gun owners, sports participants, automobile owners, single-family home dwellers, alcohol consumers, non-keto food consumers, butter and lard consumers, milk consumers, motorcyclists, boating, flying, hunting...etc.

Talk about population control and manipulation.
But if you wanted to MURDER YOUR BABY, OR put put them on mind altering drugs, or hormone bending life ruining treatments, including slice and dice of them or yourself, you are CELEBRATED!!! And even get job promotions and job security!

But light up a cigarette, they will lynch you!

I want to smoke something that gives me a high while it clears my lungs. Is that on the horizon?

Yes. A momentary glimpse through a cloud of smoke of death racing over the horizon.

Right. I wasn’t trying to pin the blame on him for whatever reason, just wondered what he had in his life, like most of us had in ours, could have contributed to it.

Doesn’t really matter why, just sucks that it does.

“Smoking is still widely done in China, India, and other developing countries.”

Smoking is the least of their problems. Merely breathing the air in urban areas is like smoking a pack a day.

I smoked for 45 years. Then I got double pneumonia. I’m pretty sure it was acid reflux, but my wife insisted I give up the smokes. I had some medical problems this year that related to my stomach. This is after 19 years of being smoke free. I had every test imaginable including CAT, MRI, Colonoscopy and some test surgery. Everything including my heart, liver and lungs were fine. I will not go back to smoking, but even after 19 years when I dream I still am a smoker.

I experienced that same drowning effect. What a horrible experience. In my case, it was called an acute exacerbation event. Two or three of these events can take weeks off your life.
