Maria Fletcher, Miss North Carolina 1961 and Miss America 1962. Her appearance on "What's My Line" as the mystery guest the day after her Miss America win in September 1961. The segment begins at 16:04 --
https://youtu.be/Nk2z1a9uAWw
The host John Daly incorrectly calls her Miss America 1961, instead on 1962. He did the same thing the next year with Miss America 1963, Jacquelyn Mayer. Odd, given that Daly often was one of the Miss America pageant judges.

No more chicken wing. Now we are instructed to relax elbow and tuck it in. Helps for easier aiming in tight quarters and allows longer aim times before becoming shaky.
Shotgunning at skeet, trap and hunting is different. You want the chicken wing and tight shoulder muscles to allow better tracking.

Yeah, I was commenting in a time-frame sense.
That was the old, classic, hold.
Those were the days.

Yeah. Early. No forward assist
Still like garands better. wouldnt want to lug my Garand into battle at my age though. For real close range I dont mind slinging my M1 Carbine. Dad slung his At Guadalcanal
All lost (sigh) when the canoe flipped

Pointy is right. You could hand clothes hangers on the bras from the past.

If that picture were 2019 instead of 1962, one might expect it not to be America, and her name to be ‘Fatima’ or ‘Aisha’. (Mind you, there is no bomb vest.)
Times have changed but not for the better.

Thats the way it was done back in the day.
Not tacticool but very stable and effective if you have to do off hand.
The no chicken wing shooting style taught these days by tactical gurus is sound from a profile minimization aspect and fits in well with a light weight, compact rifle assault rifle shooting low impulse round like 5.56 or 5.45 with modern optics and using modern military shooting style.
On the other hand, the good old chicken wing is not so stupid if you need to shoot a bunch of 7.62 NATO after humping a heavy, full size MBR like a FN FAL or M14 for better part of a day in bad conditions
Times change and styles change.
What really matters is hitting what you aim at.
But then again, Ive only recently moved away from iron sights so Im kind of old school, or maybe just plain old
Cant recall anyone getting shot in the elbow but Im sure its happened

Nice “C” trigger finger. Both eyes open. Could probably get her cheek weld closer, though. Otherwise she looks like she knows what she’s doing.

Or from NRA instructors. Or her Dad, who had military experience. Remember in ‘62, no one had military experience, or much other type, with the AR-15 platform.

For offhand target shooting I find the chicken wing more stable than the elbow down position.
