I always considered The Who to be the first punk rock band years before it became a named thing.

Here, he seems to say that he invented heavy metal in 1970 with “Live at Leeds” — and then Cream came along in 1967 and stole it! Jimi Hendrix, dead in 1969, did the same!
Have to agree-The Who is more like a precursor to Punk-which I also like-Led Zeppelin, Cream-that is my idea of Heavy Metal-I jam to it on the way home from work all the time on the classic rock station (and I have the Mothership CD in the truck, along with some other favs)...

Never thought of that before. Then again, I haven't thought of The Who since high school.
That song was supposed to be about a Mod, who originally got their name because they liked to listen to modern jazz, venting his frustrations. The stutter came from an overuse of amphetamines used to stay up all night at their clubs.
Towhshend said he was inspired to write the song because his car got towed.
