Nope. Black Sabbath invented heavy metal.

The lyrics to Ball and Chain are enough to put me off the new album.

Townshend is so arrogant and egotistical, it’s hard to take him seriously anymore.
That being said I still like a lot of their music and if they have new stuff coming out, I’ll have a listen.

Dunno about that. I lived through the 60’s and nobody back then considered The Who as heavy metal. Turning the amps up does not heavy metal make.

I always considered The Who to be the first punk rock band years before it became a named thing.

It’s hard to do heavy metal with mini-humbuckers plugged straight into Hiwatts. :-)
The Who was not heavy but rather dynamic, punchy and lyrical.

FEH. Led ZEPELLIN invented heavy metal. 🎸

There are probably lots of bands who contributed, including Blue Cheer (e.g. Summertime Blues).

I always considered Live at Leeds the seminal punk rock album, not heavy metal.

Sort of, while I can’t explain, I can see for miles, all the way to the eminence front....

Just spent some time listening to some 60’s Rock-N-Roll instrumental songs like Wipe Out, Pipeline, Telstar, Apache etc.. they sounded like the roots of Heavy Metal to me.
