Weekly Garden Thread - December 21-27, 2019
December 21, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 12/21/2019 6:42:33 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

What a lovely story thanks for sharing. Hubby’s birthday is the 29th. He is 51 weeks older than me. Been married 40 years, when we were younger we used to celebrate both birthdays, then combined them into 1.

I just did grocery shopping and I am worn out. I only spent about 70 bucks and did not have a lot on my list. Store was PACKED especially the baking aisle, lots of nuts cleaned out.

Our house is a dry house no alcohol. I did buy a quart of eggnog at the store, a tradition.

we had 2-3 inches of snow two days ago....now, because it hit 53 degrees yesterday the snow is mostly gone....

but that's okay....don't mind a mild winter so far...we usually get hit hard late january and february just when you want to get outside.....

over this winter, especially with all the baking and cooking, I've been saving all my eggs shells in a zip lock bag and keeping the in the freezer to put in the compost when I can get out there......egg shells are supposed to be good for your tomatoes for one....

Merry Christmas to all......keep focused on the many blessings we have even as many go thru tough times, sad times...

God bless us, everyone..

Good Wisconsin Beer, Ya-Hey! ;)

When I was first married, 150 years ago, and we were dead broke and just starting out, we’d buy a case of Leinie’s in glass bottle WITH a deposit so you had to return the bottles, for about $10.

We had to make that case last a month...and we did...and that included ‘entertaining’ and cooking, as in Beer & Cheese Soup (free Government Cheese!) and Beer Bread (which I still love to bake to this day!)

I will love Leinenkugel until the day I die. :)

Yep. I did a Super-Duper Walmart Run yesterday afternoon and it was slightly nuts - I knew today would be insane, LOL!

No white Christmas here either. Warmest day this month - 62 degrees. I can deal —had enough snow this week, it’s still melting.

Leiney’s original is my favorite. It was the number 1 beer in the Twin Cities for decades back when it was independent.

Unfortunately, the Missouri Miller distributors carry only the “sweetened” variety which I can't stand.

So...when we are up in Iowa two or three times a year for various duties, a call to the hometown Hy Vee makes sure they have a case or two of returnables.

Iowa has a bottle and can return law which has hammered the former cardboard box and glass bottle format. The bottles are not “returned” at all.

With the deposit, original Leiney’s is nearly $70/case...

Sorry! I forgot you were a Zone colder than I am!

Also, where this would be planted would the area to the back West side, where the sun does not get for very long. But thanks for the offers.

Here is a list of ones I never heard of, and some good info on short season toms. And here is Burpee's list of them. Glory to God who made the first garden, and set man to care for it. But if are born again we can work to see the kind of "fruit" Paul spoke of!

“With the deposit, original Leiney’s is nearly $70/case...”

GASP! Who’d a thunk it, LOL! Another fave from back then, when CHEAP was the only factor was Huber Beer.

Even though I grew up on Milwaukee, I can’t stand the sweetness and the too-many bubbles of PAbst Blue Ribbon. And I agree on those fruity Leinenkugel beers they have out now. Bleck!

Two gals I used to work with would order two different kinds and make themselves some gawd-awful layered beer with them. I think they thought they were making Black & Tans, fer Pete’s Sake, LOL! My teeth hurt just thinking of the sweetness of those awful concoctions!
